Why I No Longer Accept Free Products From Companies

I wrote the following letter to my newsletter subscribers as I was leaving the Craft & Hobby Association Trade Show last January of 2010.

* * *

Something happened when Izzy and I were covering the Craft & Hobby Association trade show that inspired us to make a major business decision. It’s a decision that affects my relationship with you as a scrapbooker. We walked the thousands of booths, choosing which ones had products and demo’s I thought would be of most interest to you, sometimes having to turn down requests for video coverage because we only have time to share what we think you’ll want most. Many of the manufacturers handed me packets of their products, hoping they will end up on projects that appear in my tutorials. This is a common practice in the industry — I don’t mean to make it sound like I’m anything special.

I have mixed emotions whenever it happens. On the one hand there’s the rush that we all feel whenever we’re offered something free. Especially when it’s something we already wanted, right? On the other hand, there was a creeping discomfort I couldn’t explain and really didn’t take the time to try to identify.

I made a comment to Izzy about all the talk at the trade show by scrapbook designers and press members needing to ship all their freebies home. He had an idea that, at first, I didn’t like. . .not after My Mind’s Eye had just offered to send me some products from their new mini-book line, a line that almost made me salivate all over their floor. But as Izzy and I talked about the possible impact of his idea, I realized I wanted to do it for sure. And all that day, as packets stuffed with beautiful scrappy goodness slipped into my hand, I slipped them back to their rightful owners and explained our new business decision.

A Major Business Decision

I am no longer accepting free product for use in my scrapbooking and paper-crafting projects.

I am not aware of anyone else in the industry doing this. Let me tell you why I decided to do it and what it means for you. Those who have been with me long know that I am quite honest with my opinions about scrapbook products, stores, and magazines. But even I recognize that it’s hard not to be at least slightly biased about a product that you didn’t have to buy yourself, especially when you know that that company will probably want to give you even more if you give their products good coverage.

It’s important for you to know that the products I use and recommend are products I like enough to actually pay for them. Myself. You will always know that I cannot be bought or sold by any company. How is that for enabling Paperclipping to offer you the best recommendations in the industry? Several people told me this is crazy because it’s an expensive decision to make. But that’s a price I’m willing to pay and a price I’m willing to pay for you.

Once again, this is a case where the Paperclipping Members are the ones who are making all of this possible. Much appreciation to our Paperclipping Members.

At this time I have not been able to sign up as a member simply because of cost (a by no means do I not think it would be worth every penny). I have lurked at your free tutorials and LOVE your roundtable discussions. Your letter has really hit me hard. As a scrapper on very tight budget, I see these amazing layouts that are published and tink to myself – wow, how much did that cost to put together. I then become extremely discouraged because I realize it is the same people who are always published and because of that, they are probably getting free stuff. There is no way the “normal” scrapper can compete with that and I have finally stopped trying. I am so impressed by you and this idea that as soon as I can afford it, I will be signing up. You have gained a trust and credibility from your audience.

Thank you again for providing the Best site for tutorials and your podcasts. I love getting all the info as I hope to one day get into the industry. I wil continue to be a faithful listener and am looking forward to signing up as soon as my finances allow (hopefully in next couple of weeks).

Thank you for your comment! I want you to know that even when I was accepting free product before, only a very small, small percentage of what I used was for free. I have always just preferred to pick out my own products. So I can appreciate your sentiment and know what it's like not to have what I see other people using.

Well, good for you. I hope you are still able to sample a wide selection of what is out there, and tell us about it. There's so much scrappy goodness to be tempted by.

That is definitely one potential drawback to the decision (less sampling). I
think it's worth it, though. And I do have the benefit of being able to see
a lot of product in person (even if I'm not using it), so I think it'll work
    out okay.

    Thanks! :)

Wow this is a big decision and one that would be hard for most of us to make…but I see your point. So thank you for taking your viewers in to consideration when you were making this decision. I'm always impressed with the pages you make and how you reuse your scraps…You are such a thrifty person and I have confidence that you will be just fine without all the free products.

Good for you!!! I love your show and everything you do. I hope your membership grows and wish you guys great success. Your honesty and integrity show through.

ps. My favorite review of yours included you tossing a ruler over your shoulder because it was useless. Cracked me up, because I did the same thing, same product.

Oh yeah, lol, I forgot about that! :)

I really did throw that thing away. After that episode. Hee heee.

  • Janet

BRAVO!!!!! I left as a moderator from a scrapping site in major part because of that…exactly as you put it…creeping discomfort. I needed to scrap for me, not for a product. Nothing is ever free even if it doesn't cost you a dime.

Oooh, great way to put it and it's so true!

As the PR Manager for the Craft & Hobby Association, I applaud your ethics and recommend that you consider a traditional a PRODUCT LOAN AGREEMENT as an option. This is a common practice where companies provide you with temporary use of a product for review purposes. Following your review you simply return the product to the company. You never own anything, so you never compromise your standards.

This remedies your problem of being beholden to companies for a favorable review, while providing you with the autonomy to do what you do. This is the process by which the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and most media outlets use where members of the media are expressly prohibited of receiving gifts valued at more than $25. Additionally, this process doesn't put you at a competitive disadvantage with any other reviewers who may be getting the freebies.

    Good luck….

If I wasn't already a member, I would have signed up just because of this business decision. I have the greatest admiration for both of you on a personal and professional level. Now I will go out and try to round up as many new members for you as I can so that you can continue to provide the highest level of professional, fun and amazing products for us that you do! Love to you both! Kat (aka Skrapkitty on Twitter and katvk on the PC Live chat)

    Hello
I have been looking for an email address to put a question to you for your panel of roundtable – so apologies for posting here. I teach scrapbooking in Dubai with others and we would really like to visit the USA to a convention and visit stores. We would like to know so we can build the excitement and plan well in advance. So , Where and when would you suggest for the Scrapbookers of Dubai would be the most worthwhile – although just being in a scrapbook store in the USA would be exciting enough.
