  • I’m in the middle of this episode and loving it– but I want to BEG Christie to take a picture of the “organizers” she uses for her projects in progress! I’d love to see it in use!

  • I read a quote that reminded me of parts of this episode… “Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle.” I probably saw it on Pinterest and do now know who said it, but it stuck with me. I think it’s something that people get hung up on while creating with new techniques, or just in general. For example, I love how Amy Tan mists. She’s amazing. But I try not to get frustrated when mine don’t turn out like hers. When I take a step back, I realize that she’s a professional (literally) and I’m just getting started.

    I also really enjoyed hearing everyone else’s organization tips as well! Good show! :)

    That’s a great reminder! I heard something similar recently that really spoke to me too – that we always compare the worst of ourselves with the best of other people. If people are sharing their work, it’s usually their best, not their hesitant experiments or dismal failures when they were just learning. I’m terrible at wanting to skip over the beginner phase, but I’m working on it.

    After taking Debbie Hodge’s Critique Class, I’ve been focusing on using more embellishments on the page (ie. polishing the page as I think Doris Sander called it). I set up 10 clear shoe box sized bins on a side table in my scrapbooking room and I’ve been trying to use things from at least 5 of the boxes on every page. (ie. one box has stamps and inks; another has bling and brads; another has ribbons & washi tapes; etc). It has made it so much easier for me to put more embellishments on my scrapbook pages.

    Some comments on the show addressed both topics, but I would love to hear shows on 1) organization of limited space and 2) use of limited time. I am a full-time working mom to an eight-month-old and I have a small office/exercise room/scrap room/dressing room (so I don’t wake anyone when getting ready for the day at o’dark thirty). On any given week, I could be working, organizing the family budget, running on the treadmill, scrapbooking, you name it, in the same space, so I don’t like to leave too much around. But I find it easier to pick up and scrap when my project is left on the desk. It’s a dilemma!

  • Hi Suzi – It is a dilemma! I’m also a working mom and when my kids were babies I would scrapbook out of a tote on the dining room table and I put everything away every time; I also used to do much of my journaling on the computer at work (which was ok with the boss since I work at a family business). When my kids were pre-schoolers, they would often scrapbook with me in my scrapbook room – so then I just had to be careful about leaving sharp things out of reach. Now, they are 9 and 11 and they come in and scrapbook with my from time to time, and while I mostly scrapbook in my scraproom – when my lifeguard duty starts – as it will any day now since we live in Florida; I am again back to the tote and I bring it out to the pool while I watch them swim.

    And P.S. I think those are great show topics since I’m always tweaking my system and love to hear about limited space & time issues as applied to scrapbooking.

    One more P.S.: If I could do it all over again, I’d focus more on the journaling when they were small and less on the scrapbook layouts or the way the layouts looked.

    Great idea! I hadn’t thought about it, but journaling is pretty portable. I have a long bus commute, so I could just email it to myself, or take along card stock to handwrite at lunch. Thanks!

    I hear ya, I have a dedicated storage space for my supplies, but a shared workspace. I tend to work in small bits and pieces of time, so I’ve come up with a few things that help me: I tend to make my own page kits (a la Shimelle/glitter girl), so I can be more productive with the time I have. Then, I have a box that can hold those supplies, including punches, etc. When I need to clean up the shared workspace, I dump all the supplies in the box, then put the layout in progress on top of the box, and on the shelf it goes, where I can come back and look at it, fiddle with it, and its out of the way and won’t get messed with. When I’m ready to work again, I just pull the box off the shelf, and there I have my layout and my supplies. Its been a game changer for me.

    Hey, I was listening to a couple episodes today, so I can’t remember if this was the one where Noell mentioned loving McDonald’s French Fries, and someone asked if she could eat those while being vegan. I hate to burst your delicious food bubble, but while the frying oil is vegetable oil, they use beef flavoring in the initial frying process at the processing plant (and the beef flavoring also contains a milk byproduct).

  • Oh, no no no — I DON’T eat McDonald’s french fries. It’s the opposite. I love french fries, but only good ones. I don’t eat any fast food french fries except from In N Out because they all taste freezer burned and have no good potato flavor left in them. I learned about McDonald’s in particular when I first became vegan. But thank you for spreading the word — most people would never guess their french fries are not vegetarian, let alone vegan.

    Let me just start out with … baby wipes & a pumice stone are my new best friends.

    Last week I was scrapping on my living room floor. I decided the layout needed some spray; so I pulled out my {Full} bottle of Glimmer Mist & got to work. Stupid me … I didn’t screw the lid back on.

    Obviously I would end up knocking it over.

    Not wanting to waste half the bottle that was on my, thank god laminate wood flooring, I rushed to grab any paper that I could use to help clean up. I grabbed some baby wipes to wipe up the last bit that was starting to dry to the floor . Worked like a charm. Yay!!

    So now I have half a bottle of GM, a stack of blue glimmery paper to use, my white shorts have a nice ombre effect, And my fingers are dyed blue. Not good when I had to be to work in a few hours, where blue fingers are Definitely looked down upon.

    I tried scrubbing my fingers with every kind of soap I could find. It wasn’t working. I was about to freak out when I saw the pumice stone and got to work.

    Lucky me, the only blue left is around my fingernails, and in the pictures I took to scrap about how I used half my bottle of glimmer mist.

    I love the idea of doing things in batches! I have always kind of done this, but not in a conscious way. I have tended to do this with stamping, paint, etc – wet area stuff! – and yes, it allows me to experiment and enjoy the process. It has helped me to be a bit “free-er” and less precious about things. And I have just done a bunch of cards this way, and yes, I learnt as I went and tried things differently on each one.

    But I haven’t considered it for bigger projects – ie. an example given was to do 6 canvases at once. I like that idea. Yay!
