There are many non-religious families who celebrate these holidays to celebrate their own values of hope, tradition, family, giving, spring and new life, etc. Since these holidays were originally pagan and then adapted to Christianity, I don't see anything wrong with the non-religious deciding to adapt them as well.

Plus, it was also discussed that sympathy cards and products all lean religious as well. That was, in fact, the biggest point.

I'm still shaking my head at come of the discussion around all of the religious scrapbooking materials, specifically at the lack of non-religious Christmas and Easter products... ummmm, they are religious holidays, not just days to give gifts and hunt for eggs. That would be like having materials for the Fourth of July without mentioning America.

I just started listening to this episode and before I continued on I had to send my comment regarding the religious/non-religious scrapbooking materials... Nancy, I know you got flustered trying to explain yourself but I TOTALLY got you (about the sympathy card message). It's something you can't quite put your finger on, but you notice it when you're shopping for something specific. In addition, as a Jewish scrapbooker, I can tell you with confidence and experience that there is no such thing as "secular" Christmas paper, embellishments, etc. If I'm shopping for "winter" themed PP and I find some that has stockings on it, I'm not buying it. Stockings are related to CHRISTMAS! The same goes for bunnies at Eastertime (the season formerly known as Spring). If you celebrate these holidays, it wouldn't be as obvious to you, but if you don't, it's blaring. Honestly, it's something that causes me a substantial amount of distress, especially at "Christmastime" (or "Winter"). I've even won door prizes of Christmas-themed supplies and I look at them like, "so what am I supposed to do with this?" and they look back at me like, "well, what's the problem?" So.... I came up with a great solution to cure me of my scrapbooking related religious stress: I married a Christian! We celebrate everything (Passover/Easter, Hanukkah/Christmas) with our kids so I have no limitations for my scrapbooking materials.I feel so much better about shopping for "winter" scrap supplies now! I can finally use those cute felt stocking embellishments! The red and green combo isn't such a big deal anymore! I'm cured! I highly recommend this answer to my fellow Jewish scrapbookers..that is, if there are any out there.
Thanks for a great podcast! You are great company on my morning runs. (Surely, I don't look TOO crazy running down the street laughing?)

I love your comment about how if you can't find your ideal job, then make it happen/create it yourself. So many times in the creative industry, you start just by "participating" (through blogs and forums, etc) and then you start to realize that this is what you would LOVE to do-- and then no "normal" jobs really fit into your "ideal." The idea of creating your own ideal job is very freeing and exciting! :-)

Hello Roundtable!
Another great episode! I just wanted to weigh in on the lack of event/religion-specific products and maybe offer some advice...-Find patterned paper and color palettes that suit the mood of the story. Plain white cardstock with subtle patterned paper is always a safe bet. -Print an oversized photo and use minimal embellishments (Ali Edwards and Laura Kurz have perfected this style) for stories that may be trickier to address. Letting a large photo do the talking is a powerful, meaningful way to tell a story effectively.-Use letter stickers to spell out the situation instead of using a phrase sticker. That way you can choose an appropriate font and color to fit your project. -There are plenty of plain embellishments out there that are neutral for any and all occasions. For example: brads, buttons, markers, ribbon, washi tape, etc. -There's also the Silhouette die-cutting machine, which allows you to design your own shapes and phrases. I encourage everyone to challenge themselves to think outside of the box and carve out your own unique style instead of relying on manufacturers to fill in the gaps. Ultimately, it will be far more rewarding than buying event-specific products and it will keep our industry on the cutting-edge :)
