I love the regularity with which Izzy says: “I think we’ve found a title for this week’s episode.” (Usually accompanied by the signature laugh!).

  • Tanya

Izzy, I hate to do this to you – but you were right when you said you’re always in the wrong (then again my husband would empathise with you and say he’s always in the wrong too!) You were kind enough to read out my mail this week and I can say with 100 % accuracy – you did not read it out last week. You always do such a great job with reading the mail that I’d have been over the moon to hear you read it twice. (They do say flattery gets you everywhere)
Great topic discussion this week – I have been toying with the idea of joining in on True Scrap and love the concept. I do however have some reservations and they have nothing to do with the content/teachers etc., they have everything to do with where I live. Time difference is always such a major issue when it comes to web based events – living in South Africa means I’m awake when you’re all asleep and vice versa – so in order for me to participate live in the classes I’d have to be awake at a really ridiculous time. The other issue is bandwidth – not something we have a lot of over here. As an example – if we want to watch a youtube video – we first have to let it run through (which generally takes about twice as long as the original length) before we can watch it without the stop/starts. As I said I love the concept, I just think those of us living on the other side of the world with dodgy internet speed will not experience it as well as those of you in the US.

Listened to the first half of the show on the way to work and am really enjoying it. Everyone seems really upbeat and happy. Makes me smile.

Am I the only listener who actually pictures the guests seated around a table (and actually feels like she is sitting at the table, too?) I picture Noell and Izzy to my right, Nancy to my left, and the other guests proceed clockwise from where Nancy is sitting. Just me? OK. (blush)

Just an FYI — the link for the second pick of the week is to the Counterfeit Kit Challenge, but the text of the link says “Plastic Bullet.” (Not trying to be a pain — figured you’d want to know. :-)

  • Norma

As always, really enjoyed the show. Just had to drop a note to say that it is such a huge relief to hear that I am not the only one who signs up for far more classes than I could possibly hope to find time to actually do…the ever-elusive “someday” luring me. And Izzy, I’m with you on the books- my husband gets rather irritated with my book addiction since he is all too well aware I rarely if ever have any time to read. I just feel compelled to share that I am a Paperclipping member (I was one of those who found Noell through iTunes before it was a membership program), a Scrap Happy member, and a Masterful Scrapbook Design member, and have bought numerous Big Picture and Get it Scrapped classes. I also work full time outside the home and have 4 busy children to keep up with and chaffeur. I don’t think I have completely finished any of the classes, several are paused in various degrees of completion, and many are yet to be started; I am way behind on watching the Paperclipping videos and the Masterful Scrapbook Design material. I actually rarely ever have time to do any scrapping either, but I can’t resist the wonderful instruction and inspiration from these high quality teachers and some day I hope I really will get through it all! And I certainly don’t have to be worried about every getting bored!! Since I can listen in the car, I do stay caught up with the Roundtable. Well, all this rambling just to say that I greatly appreciate all that all of you do, and please keep up the great work!
P.S. Izzy, I love the episode titles!

Just wanted to comment about the Virtual Scrapbooking Trade Show. In 2007 and again in 2008, Better Homes and Garden as well as Shutterfly put on a 3 day virtual trade show with classes etc… online it was called Scrap-A-Faire Not sure what happened to it but it truly was awesome! From what I remember people loved it. I know Two Peas was a part of it as well as ACDC which is where I first heard of them. Just wanted to mention it. Thanks! Jennifer

    Great show again, as always!!

I was totally thrilled when Lain mentioned the Counterfeit Kit challenge. They’re only in their third month now (they started January 1st), and it’s already completely changed the way I look at my stash. Now instead of seeing piles of tired, old papers and embellishments every time I go to make a page, I instead see new possibilities and combinations with my existing supplies. And the best part? My longings to again subscribe to a kit club have been completely eliminated.

Thanks so much for the shout-out, Lain!!

And, Nancy, all I’m going to say is you’re truly the master of creating suspense. :)

  • Cara

Wow, I was completely shocked by Nancy’s pick!! I can’t believe that in this day and age she would encourage scrappers to use disposable plates!! Especially with a small family, is she really saving that much time by not washing a couple of plates? I was also disappointed that none of you piped up in protest.

    Poor trees…

  • Anonymous

Hi, Norma! Totally recognized your name and had no idea you were so busy because you are indeed a frequent and awesome customer. Thank so much for you support and participation.

Hey! :) What a great surprise to hear my name/site mentioned! :) I still have to finish listening to the show, but wanted to just share the link to the tags I’ve got on my albums: http://snowmoon.us/blog/?p=2597

All I did was use some twill…ribbon (is that what you call it?)…and tied it to the the top ring. I’m thinking of another idea which I’ll be posting to my blog as soon as I get to it.

No new show next week. Oh no!!! Withdraw. Anyone know of a 5 step program?

  • Deirdre

I thought Debbie & Noell did a great job of not protesting but allowing Nancy her own pick, and voicing their own preference for not using disposable. I say, whatever is allowing Nancy to cope—great. We all have “paper plate” times in our lives.

I enjoyed the show—but was surprised no one mentioned We R Memory Keeper albums as a solution for labels on the binding. They were the main reason I chose WRMK and I’m so happy with their quality.

  • http://ochoamores.typepad.com/morespanish/ Sherry A

Thanks for another good show! Paperclipping led me to Get it Scrapped & Masterful Design, Daily Digi, numerous blogs & products of interest to me. I appreciate all the good information about scrapbooking & technology. Just ordered my iPad 2, and I’m looking forward to its many uses. I thought I would return the favor by sharing an interesting photography site with you. http://irinawerning.com/back-to-the-fut/back-to-the-future/ This lady has re-created portraits of people, some with a 30-40 year span in between. Kind of fun…Anyway thanks for all you do. It is appreciated.

  • Cara

I’m so sorry if I misunderstood! I thought she meant that she was using paper plates on a daily basis and not as a temporary coping mechanism.

  • Amy K

Great show! You all had me laughing throughout. Noell, I really like the looks of your album tags, as well as Stacy’s.
I have several Creative Memories albums from my early scrapbooking days. Although they are each a different color, and I pretty much know who’s is who’s, I cut vinyl letters and placed them vertically down the spine, so the album subject is visible to all.
As always, thanks for the wonderful podcasts as well as the awesome Paperclipping videos and posts.

P.S. I could really use a Debbie Hodge memory voice!! :)

  • Hallymichelle

Just want to stop by and say I love your show! I have been scrapbooking since I was in elementary school and have recently explored the world of digital. I love it with my busy job and I can take it any where but I still love the paper crafts. I have been in the market for some good markers and hoping you could recommend some. I am specifically looking for a white pen that writes on a photo and does not ruin it long term as well as some general craft markers that are ideal for scrappers. Thanks for your help in advance!

    Noel, Izzy, & Nally.

I’ve been forming this comment as I listen for 10 episodes. Finally I get around to it, this SHOULD have been in your 50th episode celebration.

Listening to your show makes me feel like a scrapbooker. I don’t get to scrapbook much at all, my life is too busy. I have 2 young children (3 & 4 1/2 years), I work full time, and a husband working and going to school full time. So I make maybe 3 pages a YEAR. I’ve wanted to give up this crazy hobby a few times because I spend no time on it. But, listening to the Roundtable has validated my love for this hobby. I know I’m a scrapbooker at heart even if I don’t make ANY pages right now. THANK YOU for keeping me in this wonderful hobby, and be sure that I’ll be listening for many more years to come.

  • http://www.paperclipping.com Noell

I’m a huge believer in using the real thing (like I said, I only buy paper
for big parties with young kids. I even use the real thing for many of our
    parties).

BUT — I think there is a time and place for giving someone a pass. There
are things going on in Nancy’s life which you may or may not know about and
I’m happy to hear that she is finding some ways to ease her burden. When a
person’s health and emotional well-being is on the line, I will support them
disposing of paper for the time that they need to.

  • http://www.paperclipping.com Noell

I’m just happy to know you feel you need one! :)

  • http://www.paperclipping.com Noell

You didn’t misunderstand but you may not realize her situation.

She is using the paper plates daily during her current but temporary
tragedy. It’s a temporary coping mechanism to help her while her husband is
in prison. In addition to that difficulty itself, they’ve lost his income so
she very suddenly has to provide what he used to. Plus she has a number of
health problems and has an autistic child.

There are some people with difficulties I cannot imagine. I’m not going to
begrudge her period of daily paper plates while we sit and make albums and
albums worth of scrapbook pages out of paper.

  • http://www.paperclipping.com Noell

I’m so glad you wrote in! Not only are you a scrapbooker at heart, but if
you just do a page or two in a year, you’re telling some stories and that’s
so valuable! I’m glad you’re not falling for the false belief that you have
to do it all or do nothing!

    Anything is better than nothing!

  • Cara

I honestly thought that she was encouraging us to use paper plates on a ongoing daily basis to make more time for scrapbooking and not as a temporary means to cope with stress or tragedy. I was listening while doing too many things at once and I should not have posted without listening closer and I’m sorry. Like Deirdre said above, we all go through difficult times and we all cope in different ways, I’m sorry if I added any more upset to an already difficult situation.

  • http://twitter.com/NancyNally Nancy Nally

I actually do care about the environment, I promise. Don’t forget that when you wash dishes you are using another precious resource: water. In our area we are starting to have a lot of problems with water shortages and our community is looking at having to take drastic measures like building a desalination plant to serve its water needs. Since I started using paper plates (and I am careful to use paper ones that are biodegradeable and renewable, and not foam ones, which are neither), I have only had to run my dish washer about 1/3 as much. Plus I’m not pre-rinsing the plates before putting them in there as well. I’m saving a ton of water, a very valuable resource in this community.

Everything we do impacts the environment one way or the other. There’s no way around it – nothing is free resource-wise on this planet.

  • http://www.paperclipping.com Noell

No worries, Cara. I just wanted to explain! :)

  • Marja

In the mail of this episode a few solutions were discussed to label your albums.
In Holland, where I live, Ikea sells labels for boxes that fit my albums as well.
They hold ‘strips’ of paper on which you can write what’s in them. They also fit on my albums (American craft) and will probably fit on any albums, except for those having a really thick spine. I print the labels using a background color fitting the spine of the album. I include the link, so everyone can search using the Ikea-name and then can recognize the pictures, for maybe the Ikea-collection may vary worldwide.

  • Guestfam

How am I going to get the laundry folded?

  • http://www.paperclipping.com Noell

    Hee hee!

  • Angela Spendal

Marja… THANK YOU!! I have been looking for labels like those for a long time. Not only for my albums but for my paper racks in my scrap room. I have a lot of paper racks I bought from a closing scrapbook store and I want to put labels on them. These are perfect! Thank you again!

  • Angela Spendal

I found this episode fabulous! But it is now Saturday and I’m going through withdrawal…. I am listening to a few older podcasts again while I am scrapping and enjoying them just as much as the first (or second) time! I am getting things out of them that I forgot or maybe missed some other times through. I hope you all have a great weekend and can’t wait to hear from you all again.
And Izzy, in Ep. 50 you and Noelle said that you look for people that have ‘good laughs’ to have on the show. Well sir, your laugh is FAB!! I love it! It brings a smile to my face. It is so genuine and I can just picture it. It’s one of those hearty laughs, which are the best, imo. You, Ana and Stacy are awesome laughers! Very distinctive… Can one be a distinguished laugher? As long as you are on the show, there will always be someone with a good ‘laugh’.

  • http://www.karenscorneroftheweb.blogspot.com Kpoirier-brode (ladydoc)

Me too, Norma, me too! I find I have too much on my plate; though, I think I like it that way, for the most part. Right now I’m taking a college art class (principles of design -obviously, inspired by Noell’s conviction that we need to understand these well to really get the most out of our hobby) and remodelling and decorating a house for my son (Actually, just making the decisions since I physically cannot DO much of it. Still, as my niece pointed out recently, it is a job to do what i’m doing.). How I ever think I’ll get anything like scrapbooking done during this time, I’ll never know? It’s just that the learning about stuff is so cool. So; too many books, magazines, supplies, classes not to mention all the same for other interests such as home design, knitting and my profession. (even on disabilty retirement, I try to stay up to date)

  • KiMD

I’d like to comment on the WRMK albums – I buy them IN SPITE OF the label holders on the spine, LOL. I HATE those label holders, but I find the albums such high quality. They are better quality than American Crafts, and they don’t have that ridiculous hole in the front for a picture. I would love for them to leave the label holders off . . . . . . It’s hard to get paper into the holder, and the space is too confining to be really useful. I want to use the cute round tags, too.

  • http://www.paperclipping.com Noell

I love the square hole! Wouldn’t it be nice if we could have them
custom-make them to our specifications? Without the custom expense, of
    course. :)

  • ScrappyTams

    Hey,
I wanted to let you guys know that I found you through iTunes….
I was looking for scrapbooking podcasts for my iPhone that could occupy my time as I ran my kiddos to dance, soccer and gymnastics. That is where I found the Roundtable. From there I found your blog and then became a member of Paperclipping.

Now I listen to you guys when I am in my scraproom. It’s like a great group of friends sitting around chatting as I putter and scrap.

    Thanks for keeping me company.

    T.

On a side note – I had to laugh today when I was watching one of the videos and I heard Noell say “no worries” (also saw that she wrote it on of the replies) – I say that all the time. It is the best phrase that we picked up in our Aussie days.

  • Deirdre

I just relistened to “Getting It Al Together” while cleaning up my scrap space. I finally finished a mini-album of our family vacation to San Diego last year—thanks to Noell’s series last year on scrapbooking —for those who haven’t seen it: http://www.paperclipping.com/how-to-make-a-vacation-scrapbook-steps-2-3/
Due to serve issues, I couldn’t find the step 1 page, but it had a huge impact on getting me motivated to make this album, and be able to decide how to organize it.

Also wanted to ask…I saw your twitter comment about the “Stay Calm and Carry On” posters, and as someone who dislikes being told to ‘relax’ when I’m excited about something, I think I understood your point, but I’m wondering if, in light of the crisis in Japan–and knowing its WWII London origins, it has a different connotation for you now.

It had become almost a cliche, since I see it everywhere, but in light of the way the Japanese people are staying calm and carrying on, I find it newly inspiring.

Thanks again for all the great inspiration here!

  • Deirdre

I meant Noell’s series on scrapbooking vacations:)

  • http://www.paperclipping.com Noell

I love finding out how people found us! Thank you!

So the phrase, “No worries,” may have originated in Australia, huh? Or at
least you heard it there first?

  • http://www.paperclipping.com Noell

It’s always nice to hear from someone who’s coming back to say that a particular article or video helped with a project. Thank you!!! Congratulations on your new mini-album!

About the Keep Calm posters — I think a phrase like that that is made and used for a specific situation is nice. But the idea of it in my home still bugs me, because in that case it’s just telling me I need chill. Still don’t like it. ;)

That said, whenever I share something that I don’t like or won’t do — I often wonder if I need to go back and explain that I’m just expressing my own personal taste for me. It’s cool with me if other people love it and buy and I don’t think a single thing of it. I know you weren’t thinking that but it’s just a common misunderstanding that happens — when you express you don’t like something or won’t do something for specific reasons, people tend to feel like you’re judging them for liking it or doing it. I think it’s a natural human reaction, so I just wanted to mention it for anyone who’s reading why those posters bug me! :)

I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with the posters. They just don’t inspire me or make me feel good the way I assume they must make other people feel, based on their current popularity.

I know PRT has discussed many ways of memory keeping in the digital age including Izzy’s motion scrapbooking. I had an Ah-Ha moment this week and wanted to share. I recently finished up iScrap with Stacy Julian. On the last day of class she posted her completed album in a slide show format with her reading the journaling on each page. It was so moving to me. Listening to her story, being told in her voice. I decided I had to make my own! (posted at http://scraplifters.blogspot.com/2011/03/iscrap-2010.html).

And that was when it hit me…what a gift for our children! Our story…told in our voice! I know that with cards that carry sound and books you can record yourself reading, the technology will soon be there to add sound to a paper layouts but until then there has to be an alternative. All kinds of ideas about the format are flying around in my head. Since I photograph each layout for blogging I could make a mini-movie (on my Mac in iMovie of course) and upload with the blog post. Or at the end of an album I could make a movie of all the pages. I could load it onto a dvd and slip in the back of the album or find a small jump drive to store it on and attach to the album. So many possibilities!

I would love to hear any other ideas about how to incorporate sound with our layouts! Thanks for all the inspiration you bring!

    Monica

HURRY UP & Post the NEXT EPISODES (PRT & PDS)!!! We missed you this past week :0) Hope you enjoyed your week off!

  • Carla

i know you said there wouldn’t be a show the week of the 14th, but will there be one this week (the week of the 21st)? This is actually our spring break right now here in Oregon so I was kind of confused… I am crossing my fingers and refreshing often!

  • Carla

oh hey Izzy… I think I may know why people often don’t put their real names in their comments here… after you write your comment and push the button “post as” a box comes up to put in your email address and then right under that is a box that automatically enters the first part of your email as who is commenting. I think people may just be leaving that as is and not refilling it in with their real name… just a thought…. =)

  • Carla

omg that is such an awesome idea!

  • Carla

omg that is such an awesome idea!

Thank you for sharing your link — you album looks awesome and it’s so cool
to hear your reading. You have a good reading voice!

You know what’s so bizarre? Liz Ness is experimenting with something
similar! I can’t believe you brought this up at the same time that she has
been sharing some vocal recordings of her own. Here they are–

This first one is a poem she wrote along with her thoughts about it being a
    new sort of story-telling art:

    http://www.liznessstudio.com/2011/03/winds-day-2/

This second one actually goes with a piece of art she made:

    http://www.liznessstudio.com/2011/03/bolero/

She doesn’t share ideas for incorporating it into books, but it’s
interesting to see the similar interest and I wonder if this will become a
    new movement!

  • Alison

For my spines I too follow Stacy Julian’s idea with the hanging tabs with clips but for the post bound albums thT don’t have the flat space I attach the tags through a ribbon and wind it through the whole album and attach it on the outside. I hope that makes sense!

  • Al

check out Ali Edwrads site – she uses a white pen all the time and usually references her work.

  • Al

Thank you Nancy. I too was about to jump on the environmental bandwagon, especially after having just read the book No Impact Man. Thank you though for giving us your perspective and to Noell for reminding us not to judge before we know all of the variables. Noell, your comment about using paper supplies for crafting hit me as well. I’ve been trying to see what my personal impact is on the world and I hadn’t yet gotten to that point. Case made. Again thanks. That may be one more push to make more digital pages :0) Bottom line is we all have to do our part in some way…

  • Alison

Ditto to you to Norma. I’m in the same boat when it comes to online education and inspiration (Scrap Happy, BPC, Jessica Sprague, Shimelle, the Digi Files…). I have way more class material then I know what to do with. Thank goodness for LOAD when I can actually use that inspiration and complete some 90 layouts over the year! There is something about that challenge that lets me get over the perfectionism that usually reigns over my scrapping.

As for books, Ihad to laugh over the comments. I finally had to let go of that fettish and I have become a ferocious user of our library. I have a “to read list” a mile long and still add a ton of ebooks into my ilibrary. I am starting to enjoy audible books again after realizing how much I like listening to paperclipping (and now that I’m caught up too I have to “listen” to something). I’m making a dent in my list but I was taking up too much real estate on my book shelves with books that never got read. I’m trying to encourage my kids to be better stewards and to make use of public resources. So far so good.

Thanks again for even more inspiration this week everyone!

  • http://www.paperclipping.com Noell

    Thanks, Al!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1379710323 Monica Sperry Bradford

I’ve been going back and listening to old episodes of Paperclipping Digi show. While listening to Episode 30 today I heard someone, Pamela I think, choose the Franklin Every Book Reader as a pick. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004C0839Y?ie=UTF8&tag=izzvid-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B004C0839Y
You put a sticker on a page and run the reader over it and it will play your recording for that page. A sticker could easily be included on each scrapbook page. That would be a way to record your journaling. And it would allow different people to read on different pages, or to give their perspectives. Hmmmmm…so many possibilities!
