Stacy's pick and Noell's comment about how humans have been story tellers since the beginning of time made me think of something a friend of mine recently said. He said, "Stories are the containers that hold truth." He believes there is factual truth and personal truth. That it doesn't matter if the story is factually true. It's the personal, life lesson, kind of truth that is important. And the story is the vessel that holds it. I think that is such a beautiful idea and just had to share!

Cool story! Sounds like a great social piece in addition to the journaling
one! Since that old typewriter is an antique, is it vintage-pretty enough to
keep out there on display? It'll have a dual-purpose!

Hi there,

Just something to add about writing the story down immediately.

I've had my grandmother's old typewriter on my kitchen bench for a few days now and because it's so accessible I've been typing a lot.

Yesterday I had a lot to say and found myself standing there for over an hour typing away about what the day was and what we were doing.

I learnt to type on old typewriters in school, so typing is totally fun for me. I was making up stuff at the end, so I could keep typing!

Anyway, I was standing there amazed going, "I'm going to leave this guy out here for a bit longer, so I can do more of this!" It usually lives in another room in the house, but now I'm wondering how I can get it out of there and nearer to my scrapbooking area permanently.

Oh, and we had a family do on Saturday night and I purposely left the typewriter out. It got a work out and it was pretty funny to read what my niece and nephew said. Niece (aged 12) had never used one before and nephew (aged 15) just typed as he talked and talked about there being no backspace and that he made mistakes etc. Was funny and fun to read.

So, immediacy of story captured for me? On Grandma's typewriter of all things. It's a bit bigger than a notebook in the drawer, but it's working, so I'm going with it!

Thanks for the fun episode!

Yay, Kelly! I hated editing until I switched to Aperture. And then I fell in
love with it!

I know I've talked about my workflow in different ways around Paperclipping.
There's a bit here and there in articles -- you could try doing a search on
my website for "Aperture" and see what you come up with. There is also a
Member's Video where I share my process for choosing photos (although it's
been even more refined since then).

As soon as my Design Course is done and released to the Paperclipping
Members I am going to start working on a course for Aperture. Not only will
I teach in detail all the in's and out's of how to use Aperture, I'll also
share my workflow! :) I can't tell you how excited I am to make it!!

Loved this topic. I have a quick question...Stacy had mentioned doing a screen capture of text messages and I remember hearing someone explain how to do this in a previous episode but cannot remember which episode or how to do it. Could you please explain again how to do a screen capture?

Hi ladies and gentleman, Love the show and unfortunately I am a "schmo" but I may have to rectify that in the future :)

One question that keeps coming up for me as I listen and relisten to show after show is how do you handle the same stories/pictures? For example, I really love taking my daughter to our local parks and our family to some local beaches here, and of course some are our favorites and we have lots of pictures from several different visits. At times it feels a bit stale when all the pictures have the same background especially if something not extraordinary happens during that visit. I do love Stacy Julian's big picture approach and to try to use those pictures for things not necessarily related to that picture (ie a picure of my daughter playing at the beach on a layout about her personality), but I sometimes find it hard to get inspired by those pictures which are great, but feel stale. I know Nancy goes to Disney a lot and Noelle you mentioned your frequent trips to local parks what do you do with all those photos when they kinda all start to feel the same?

If you answer my question I'll definitely have to subscribe and become a non-schmo!

Keep up the great work!

Loved the show! I took the BPS Book of Stories class and came up with a little expandable bamboo business card holder from Amazon to hold them. I also customized some cards (made them twice as tall as a business card) so I can fill in the date at the top and circle whether I have a specific photo or memorabilia to go with the story.

Also, I have a new Mac on the way, so I think I may be migrating from iPhoto to Aperture. Noell, I'd love to hear more about your Aperture work flow. And I'd also love to get feedback from others who've gone from iPhoto to Aperture. I really just use iPhoto for organizing, and I don't currently do a lot of processing on my photos; will Aperture help me do some basic editing?

Now that I'm done laughing at the mental image you just described in your
scrap space, I'll answer your question!

Oh, yes, I totally do use a photo more than once! I have found that a single
photo can have three or four different stories to tell! One might be an
event story, another might be a relationship story, another might be an
individual personality story, then there could be a tradition story. Those
are just examples.

Or sometimes I want to scrapbook a story in my head -- I'm not starting from
a picture, I'm starting from a story. I'll go looking for a photo that
demonstrates my story well and often a good find is one I've already
scrapbooked. No worries because the layout and the story on the layout will
be totally new.

I could have sworn I've written an article on this with examples, but I
can't find it. I just might have to write another! :)

This is definitely a new thing for me in the digital photography world vs. the analog world I've done the most scrapbooking in. I would've never done a picture in more than one layout because what a pain in the behind to get another copy. Now though, I can see more than one story for so many stories (probably heavily influenced by Stacy's thoughts there) but even as much as there are pictures that I absolutely love and those are going in a special 8x8 book for Photos I Love and then I still want that picture as a part of the layout about whatever occasion the picture was taken at. In fact, I found a duplicate of a picture from 1992 that I absolutely adore and I've since scanned it, enlarged it and it's in line for addition to my photos I love. I can tell you exactly where that picture is already in my albums. Hope that makes some sense!
