    Really enjoyed this show — chronologically is something I stuggle with since reading Stacy's book Photo Freedom. I want to go this way, but years ago started chronologically with Creative Memory albums and have not had the courage yet to totally exit that system. My fate may be sealed on whether or not CM stays in business! I am one of those people that like that all my albums look the same on the shelf — weird I know, but me just the same. I tend to satisfy my need of “right now scrapping” or scrapping what I moves me by doing mini books. Maybe one day I will make the leap… (Realistically, I am not that far “behind” — working on photos that are generally less than a year old.)

    I have a little to say about “scraplifting” I think questiong whether or not it is ok is odd — if it was so frowned upon then there would not be the popularity of the sketches and page map books and scrapbook magaiznes for that matter. I think the only time it would really matter is if you are submitting a design for publication. I do (or at least try to) give those who inspire me credit if I post a layout on my blog, just to be polite. The truth about scraplifting Renee really hit on — it is just about getting it done sometimes. And if you are working digitally, templates are all about scraplifting. The truth is, many of us who enjoy scrapping are just not naturally creative nor are we graphic designers and somtimes help is needed. There are times when I find it to be more hindering, but I would hope anyone who is having difficulty would abondon it and do your own thing — I mean it is not like there is a right or wrong way or that you will receive a grade for every page — keep the eye on the prize — it is a hobby, it is memory keeping and whatever works for you to accompish your goal then groovy. Ok, I am getting off my soapbox now. Thanks for letting me feel like I am sitting with you around the table.

    “This is Julie”. All the PRTs are great. I really enjoy listening to them. I listen to them 2, 3, 4 times while at work. Since I'm working and listening, I have to listen to each several times to make sure I didn’t
    miss anything. For this one “This is Stacy!” I had to jump in and say, I do not scrap chronologically. I, like Renee, started scrapping when my daughters were older so there is no way of going back and scrapping their life. I have done tons of pages of my daughters, old pics, but mostly new. Now with my granddaughter, I have done some chronologically from the baby showers, days leading up to the birth, the birth and the days after, but after that it has been things she's done, events, holiday, etc. With another baby on the way, I'll probably do the same thing. So for the most part, I scrap the moments now, sometimes several pages sometimes just one page. Oh yea, and on scraplifting — I do it ALL THE TIME. I don't scrap the layout exactly, but it gives me an inspiration or idea on either the same subject or another subject. Keep up the great work and thank you for making the PRT's.

    As I just finished this year LOM (had the book for…a year and some?) I can see the possibilities. Never really was a chronological scrapper. I used to scrap whatever pictures I liked AND were already printed. So I could say I'm somewhere in between. Propably as I make more progress with LOM I will not be at all chronological…
    As always, it was a great show!!! but what was that bomb Izzy through at the end????? Something with CZ maybe? just guessing… oh! well June's not far! :)

    Hey, Kiki, the new design show is not scrapbook specific (that's what
    Paperclipping is for). Instead, the new show is by a professional graphic
    designer who is not in the scrapbook industry and he will be sharing general
    principles for anyone interested in any type of general design. His specific
    expertise is in graphic logo and web design and stuff like that.

    I really enjoyed the show this week! Love Renee, she is such an inspiration.
    I used to get so overwhelmed with scrapbooking chronologically and scrapbooking everything for my yearly albums. BUT I decided this year its alright to just print photos off and place them inside pockets, and if I feel inspired to design a page, then I will, but I think I am just going to have more pages with just photos and journaling, because at the end of the day thats what we will cherish, not the latest product, or technique used on the page designs. As a designer of scrapbooking products I have felt caught in the middle too many times and guilty for not 'staying up to date' with my albums. I can't believe I let myself feel like this and loose the essence of what scrapbooking is about. I feel so liberated with this system of just treating my scrapbook album as a photo album with the extra pockets filled with memorabilia and occasional designed page (Love my American Crafts D-ring Album for this). I'm looking forward to flicking through this album and sharing it with my readers when I am done. This system also allows me to get creative with other projects I have on the go like my ART IS Album and CHILDHOOD Album as well as other non scrapbooking related projects.
    Now I have to figure out away to keep my studio clean, then I can live totally guilt free!

    Totally agree with that! (I knew I wanted to comment on something else from the show but I couldn't remember what!) I try to credit each and everyone when I scraplift them exactly. I think was Noell that mentioned that when she's scrapping does not have specific ideas in front of her. More like mentally notes to use. And I agree that there is no “discovering the wheel” in art…or sort of. We all have glimpses that catched our eye/interest. So I try to give credit. I think it is an honor for the person who did it first and maybe there will be someone who might want to “translate” differently our adoption of the original work. So directing them to that original work I think is usefull (hope this make sense…)

    Love this episode. I gave up chronological scrapbooking when I was first introduced to Stacy's LOM. Wouldn't go back for anything. Also, for the record, I scraplift constantly. I can design a page from scratch but it's just not my favorite thing to do. I want to spend my time on other things but still have “wow” pages so I scraplift, mostly from BH sketches and Cathy Zielske.

    For some reason though, this episode made me think about all the unfinished projects that I have. I have a few half-finished layouts and a vacation album from my chronological scrapping days. And I have half a dozen unfinished theme albums from BPS classes (that I loved!). I also have a couple home décor projects for my scraproom (and the empty wall spots where they should go).

    Question – Do the panelists have a lot of unfinished projects? How do they avoid taking on more than they can finish? How do they find the inspiration to jump back into something that’s been set aside? How do they decide that something is not worth finishing (and what do they do with the half-finished pieces?)

    I gave up a lot of scrapper’s guilt when I gave up chronology and got “the big picture”. But still, my desire to create exceeds the time I have to actually finish the work. I scrap mostly for me; it’s my personal creative outlet so I don’t have to produce a huge number of pages to be happy. But I would still like to finish something occasionally. I would love to hear the Table's thoughts on this.

    This episode was one of the greatest (and I do love them all). Stacy Julian and Renee Pearson are amazing and together with Noell's sensitivity and Izzy's curiosity you've created the perfect hosting crew. I wish they could participate together in future episodes too :)

    Hey guys, loved this show especially! It's great to hear so many different perspectives about scrapbooking. When listening to this episode I thought about how I scrapbook. I do not scrapbook chronologically, but I do try to put my pages in somewhat chronological order… or so I thought. I looked through one of my scrapbooks and found the timeline all over the place within the space of a few years. I wouldn't put my baby pictures with my teenage pictures, but it was mainly one era in my life together. I definitely scrap whatever, whenever something strikes me. Rules, rules.. Ugh. ;)

    I did like an earlier episode also that talked about different sizes of books. I scrap in 12×12 mainly. When i started scraping I did 8.5×11 because that is what the industry was pushing. When the industry switched to mainly 12×12, I switched. I guess it's now going to all different kinds of sizes now though. I am going on a Disney cruise shortly, and thought “I'm going to have to make 12×12 books for everyone”. But after listening to your show I thought why? Mini books are definitely the way I'm going. So much easier.

    And then the last thing I wanted to comment on was about Stampin' Up, and I haven't read all of the comments so forgive me if I repeat something that was already pointed out. You can order Stampin' Up products through their website whether your with a demonstrator or not. If your with a demonstrator, however, the price is slightly reduced. But if you for whatever reason do not want to be under a demonstrator, or just don't have someone in your area, you can order without one. Kind of interesting I think.

    Can't wait for this upcoming week's show!! Thanks for the great listening material for when I scrapbook. :) Also, a quick suggestion/comment. I'd love it if you guys went around really quick in an episode and said what kind of camera you use. Just curious!

    First I want to thank Izzy for making it possible to join Paperclipping from across the ocean. I really appreciate the time you took to figure how I could join from a country that has some inherent glitches in the cyber world.
    I wanted to ask Noel about her comment this week on how architecture is an inspiration for her. I love scrapbooking and card making but I have to admit I am not a visual person. ( I am a musician by trade.) Here in Istanbul we have lots of buildings (quite and understatement) so if Noel could explain a little bit about how architecture inspires her it might be really helpful . I am always looking for new ways to be inspired. Thanks so much.

    Love PRT! Thanks for giving us scrapbookers the fun and inspiring podcast! I wanted to comment about dating our scrapbook pages. As scrapbookers we are more than artists…we ARE social historians. We are documenting the stories of our family's history for ourselves and our families both present and future. I think dating and saying who is in the photos and where the photo was taken is one of the most important things to put on a scrapbook page. I don't care if you write it on the back…just write in on there. Think about when you look back at your family's old photos. So often you don't know who that photo was of, or what year, etc. If we are taking the time to tell our family's stories, we need to provide the context of who, what, where and when. If not for our sake, for our future family members sake (or when our memory starts to fade for our own sake!). Thanks again!!! Kristin Burge

    I haven't even finished this weeks podcast but I'm feverishly taking notes, and soaking in the discussion surrounding my questions.

    I have to just say when Stacy describes the scenario of witnessing a moment and when you go back to your scraproom and say oh no I can't scrap that because halloween is on the table. I'M IN TEARS!

    I've definitely have been in that rut that Stacy describes where scrapbooking is a task / burden / expectation and I have been stalled out b/c I don't want to address the to-do list of events and activities and random pictures that are just accumulating.

    I think seriously it will take me some time to really UNTRAIN my brain to allow myself to really grab a hold of inspiring moments (i do have them and recognize them but toss them aside just like stacy said) and scrap and GO WITH IT!

    On PRT#19 Tim had a view of creating a “Timeless Memory” that idea has really hit home with me and is helping push me through the never ending todo list of chronological scrapbooking to the other side where I can “figure out a new way to make myself feel successful” (stacy).

    I was delighted with the discussion this week — it did feel like you were getting to some of the confusion I have about chronological journaling. I don't completely agree with everything, but that's okay, I liked it anyway. And there were several ideas that this show gave me. I think I may have to listen again so I can have a chance to write down some notes from this one, including one of the scrapbookers you mentioned who does focus chronologically (her name started with an A?). Since I listened while I was out running on Saturday, writing notes was not an option!

    I know there are going to be people who want/prefer to do things chronologically — I just had a conversation with one weekend before last — but there is the point that you don't have to DO it in that order, you can just file it in that order. (Yes, I know some of you gave up on that; others of us would probably still prefer it.) While listening, I realized I actually do that somewhat.

    I would add that I completely agree with what Kristin Burge was noting down there about being a social historian. You may be the historian for only your family, but still, not putting down who, what, when, where Bothers Me A Great Deal for the very reason she mentioned: I have too many photos from my grandmothers with NO INFO. It can be small, on the back of the photo, whatever, but please don't leave it off!

    By the way, my username needs a Spanish pronunciation. It's the Spanish word for librarian. Want to guess my profession? And yes, being a librarian does influence some of my social historian preferences. We are, by very nature, record keepers. Insufficient information to properly make the record makes me twitchy.

    P.S. Here's an interesting idea for another topic: techniques for getting others in the family/friends to give their input on the scrapbook. If it's the history of a family, how do you get other people involved in contributing their memories? Cathy Zielske had an example not too long ago: http://cathyzielske.typepad.com/my_weblog/2010/… but it would be good to discuss technique for how to do this. I've been contemplating how to get my mom's input into some of my albums.

    As always loved the show! Made me think about a lot of topics discussed on the show. Blogging came before FB and twitter for me. I think that I might still have blogged, if I had not been doing it already, for it lets me do longer essays on topics than I can on FB or twitter. I also like to put my LO’s where my friends and family can see them without having to belong to anything.
    Scraplifting, copying, classes, page maps deigns are all great places to get going. Not that any of my stuff looks exactly like the inspiration (even in classes, I make too many mistakes, LOL!). It just works for me. It stretches me too. I know some folk are happy making page after page that look the same. I would not be happy with that.
    Renee gave me the explanation for why I’ve never considered chronological scrapbooking to be the thing for me. It might be easy if you are 13 and just embarking on scrapbooking. For me, where would I begin? My earliest family photos, my childhood photos, my first marriage, my first child’s birth, my third husband’s oldest child, my first step-grandchild? Whew! Too much water under my bridge. Not that I do not do a trip chronologically, or some other event; but, even there I can take a few liberties. Keisha and I have the same aversion to rules!
    I also take way too many photos and I think I’ve lost a year or two. Have to fire up the old computer and see if they are there. I’m thinking not. I do have an old damaged hard drive and a long suffering computer geek son who has the equipment to retrieve data so I should get him over to do find those missing pics. I’ve been lackadaisical about the photos but PRT is instilling some discipline in me to get things backed up and printed! My dear son will appreciate this – though he has the most endearing sighs when I call him in a panic!
    Great picks of the week! I’ve skimmed the sites but am settling down to consider which items I need right now. I, too, would love an index of the picks. I’m thinking of a 50mm lens but have to remember which episode that was in again to help me with my decision. Likewise for a few other picks. That’s, of course, the result of this successful show and a plethora of episodes!
    BTW, Noell, some of us read your personal blog before we discovered Paperclipping. Looking forward to this week’s episode of PRT. I’m heading over to the new Paperclipping episode after tonight’s PC Live

    Scraplifting is just using a blue-print for a page. Much like a blue-print for a house. What we put IN the house makes it a home. And there is NO such thing as a custom made house. My father was a contractor and my uncle was his architect. And when they 'designed' homes for clients, they would pull out blue prints of other homes they did and combine things to make it 'new' for their client. That is how the world is! Good grief! Look at our buildings in Washington, DC… they weren't designed as 'new' but the architects looked to ancient Greece for inspiration. Same with any creative outlet. Even when you go and look at the masters in the art galleries… you can see they were influenced by other painters or inspired by things around them.

    I just wanted to comment about the show in general. I think I found out about your show from Stacy Julian's blog. And I am hooked. I haven't scrapped much in the past just because of time constraints that all moms tend to have. However I recently have found myself unemployed. And I have all this time now. So while I haven't scrapped a ton I have managed to get some things done. Like organizing my office so it will be easier to scrap. Anyways I've recently started working in my overgrown garden and I take my trusty ipod with me. I've downloaded all the paperclipping round table shows and listen to you guys while I weed. You make the time go by quickly and make me laugh. I love hearing from all the guests. I don't get any scrapbook magazines anymore. I actually just read a few blogs, – actually past guests of yours Cathy, Stacy, Ali, Becky, and Renee to name a few. And a few sites. But I love listening to you guys and getting what almost feels like secret information from the “big names” of scrapbooking. So in this very long winded email I just wanted to say thank you for making me think about scrapping more, making me think why I want to scrapbook and entertaining me at the same time.

    Love the show! I particularly liked this episode. Maybe because it was longer? :) Well, I do like the extra time but I also liked the philosophical nature of the discussion. It's neat to consider what is at the heart of our habits and if they are really serving us the way we want them to.
