Photo-Capturing Your Important Places

Arizona
On the Paperclipping Roundtable, I talked about my change of heart as I rolled into the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, on my way to moving here after years of swearing that Arizona was the one place I never wanted to live!

It was the saguaro cacti that did it to me first. I remember driving between the canyons and feeling so much awe at all the tall giants pointing to the sky. I have yet to figure out how to capture the majesty of the saguaro in photos!

I’ve been trying for a while to tell the story of how the Sonoran Desert makes my heart feel — to tell it through photography. I’m an amateur, but above and below are a few of my captures so far…

Trails Near Usery Pass
This is one of the trails Izzy and I bike on Fridays. It’s the same trail where Aiden encountered the jumping cactus when the only way I had to remove the ball of hooked thorns from his fingers was to claw it with my entire hand. It was one of those moments when you realize you’ll do anything for your children — which is another of the many reasons my soul is so wrapped up in this place. It was a good kind of pain.

You can see what the jumping cactus looks like in the second photo from the top. They are the spidery-looking ones with a yellow glow. They’re exotic and hideous and beautiful all at the same time.

Closeup

Lately I’ve been focusing on trying to get isolated shots of the interesting plants around here and getting a little bit of art inspiration in the process.

These shots will be part of the story I’m assembling in one themed scrapbook about home that I’m excited to eventually share!

So what are your the important, soul-stirring, and meaningful locations in your own life-story?

Lovely photos! You’ve given me the feel for it (though those hook things – you gotta show us a photo of those).

For me it’s the mountains of Colorado and the entire Greater Yellowstone Area – both played important parts in my childhood and play even bigger roles in my life now.

    Thank you, Janet!

I’ve sen your AMAZING Yellowstone photos! They’re so inspiring and
beautiful! Do you photograph places in Colorado, too? I can’t remember
seeing any of your photos there.

We absolutely love the Sonoran as well. For me, it’s the incredible earthy colors; the sages, terra cottas, and the blooming cacti. Total eye candy! For the longest time, we thought we’d move to AZ when my husband could get a transfer. Now we’d prefer to go to Albuquerque (3,000 feet of elevation makes the climate a bit more tolerable for us), but we love it for similar reasons and similar terrain. I really like your close-up of the Saguaro, btw.

It’s the beach for me. We vacationed there every summer growing up and now we have started taking our kids every summer. It’s where we take our family photos-perfect at sunset! I have started running along our beach highway and that is SO nice! I am drawn to the water and could never live away from the coast. It makes me happy :)

We sometimes drive from AZ to Missouri and I love it when we get to go
through Albequerque! It’s interests me the way different cities/states and
artists choose to portray their landscape/climate inspiration through art.
So I find New Mexico interesting because our land is the same (theirs is
greener with more trees) and our city art is similar, but Albequerque uses
blue where we use more terra cotta. It’s so interesting.

I also really love visiting the downtown area of the university. We’ve
    enjoyed some cool restaurants there!

Good luck with your possible move there!

Love that! I grew up in L.A. and we used to go to the beach all the time! It
was a huge part of my life. I’ll never forget the soul-stirring feeling I
always got while driving when we could suddenly see the ocean!

I hadn’t been to a beach in years until I finally said we had to go and we
took off for San Diego. It all came back to me! The beaches in southern CA
is definitely one of those important places for me!

I am super envious of your beach highway runs!!!!!

A couple of things to try for your images. Of the tall catus, try shoot up so it elogates the catus. If you can, lye on the ground. The really tall catus that is almost palm tree with thorns looks, when you take the picture, meter off of the darker part of the cactus. You can adjust down from there. It will probably blow the sky out at first, but it will give you a good starting point. If you are using AP mode, but your red focus dot so is on the tree, press the shutter half way down, recompose, the finish pressing the shutter. (I’m not sure what your knowledge of camera are. ;) )
Love the one of you and Izzy and the full frame of the plant shots.

Beautiful photographs — love the close ups and the wider shots all so much! Now, I’m not so afraid to come visit you. I’ll still give those jumping thorny bushes their space, however, heh-heh!

  • Girlwhoscraps

love this post and all of the posting you have been doing lately! Thank you :)

I love your photos! I have also been trying to capture photos where I live. There is a lake in the middle of the city called Green Lake that I have run around countless times. Its 2.8 miles around and one or two laps is the perfect work out for me. I am there so often, but never have my camera because I am always running. Recently I have decided to take a day to bring my camera and photograph the path and the trees and all the ducks…all things that I see almost every day and totally take for granted. This area means so much to me and I would love to have a scrapbook page about it!

Thanks for your input Kim. I am pretty knowledgeable but I appreciate you
making sure your feedback is clear, not knowing how much I do or don’t
    know! :)

The cactus — I laid on the ground once a few years back but I had my son in
the shot with the cactus (in a bed of thorns, by the way!). I do want to try
it again without my son, but one of my issues is I’ve rarely liked vertical
tree shots, even by professionals. I’ll try it again.

The tall “palm tree with thorns cactus” — What you’re saying I think is to
expose for the tree, even though the sky will blow out. Then adjust to get
the best compromise between the tree exposure and the sky exposure? That
sounds good. Sometimes I forget to do that!

So, when are you coming down then? ;)

  • http://www.paperclipping.com Noell

    Oh good! Thank you!

Sounds awesome, Jenn! I bet it’s a great workout — running around a
    beautiful lake! So cool.
