Paperclipping 121 – Layout Design Renovation

Paperclipping 121

This video is available to members only.

Today’s we’re going to apply a number of the design principles we’ve discussed throughout Paperclipping to completely renovate an old layout I made years ago. You’ll see the huge difference it makes to know a few key principles. Enjoy!

Below is the layout I featured in the video…

I loved this episode. Renovating an old layout really helps me to apply the design principles. I am inspired to redo two layouts I have in my first scrapbook…it is a very important scrapbook…the story of my daughters adoption but two of the layouts I think look REALLY bad. I didn't know anything about design principles when I did this book so most of the pages could use some work but I am going to leave them all alone except for these two….they really bug me! I think I will do a before and after on these two. It should be fun.

Very interesting video. Keep them coming. I would never take apart and re-do an old layout, though. It's part of who I was at the time, and the style of the layout is almost as important as what's on it.

I'm glad you brought that up, Jeanette. I don't want to give people the
impression that this tutorial was a recommendation for people to redo the
layouts they don't like. I decided to do it just so I could demonstrate the
difference design can make so people can start their new layouts on better
ground in the first place. I'd rather spend my time documenting stuff I
haven't yet documented instead of re-doing the stuff I already have.

At the same time, I also understand wanting to redo a few very important
layouts (like in the comment above) where you have a significant story to
tell and the page you made is actually a distraction from that story.

But, like I said, this tutorial is definitely not a suggestion that people
    go redo an old layout.

This scrapbook I am talking about was a labor of love to my daughter and I think it will be very important to her and to her children some day. I literally spent about 2 weeks on each layout. I was brand new to scrapbooking but I wanted it to be beautiful. And it is beautiful, and I enjoy looking at it. It is huge, 44 pages, all of them are double layouts, so 22 double layouts. But when I get to these pages, I sorta cringe inside. So I think redoing them will be a good thing. I would not go back and redo any other layouts, but like Noell said, these are a distraction to this very important project.
I posted them in the crop circle and hope to get some feedback on why they are just not right, or visually pleasing.

Wow! Noell this was awesome. I would love to see more episodes like this :) It really helps to see how to put all those principles together on a layout. Your layout turned out amazing and I loved how you layered your embellishments!

Wow. That's awesome! awhile back I totally gave up two page spreads because of not having any design principles. I think this episode will help a lot! Beautiful page. I think I need to get some misty sprays. I have a few alcohol inks, but I guess I need to get some perfect pearls for them before mixing them into a spray bottle? Love the transparencies. How do you attach yours? Beautiful work!

  • http://www.paperclipping.com Noell

I'm glad this helped, Tarren. There are definitely times when I feel my
story & photos need a two-page spread. We've had a number of episodes in the
past that cover two-page spreads, though you would need to be a member to
    watch them if they're archived.

I haven't used alcohol inks myself (I'd love to try them!) but maybe someone
who knows will see this and answer that question.

The transparencies…I added basic tape runner to the areas behind my
photos. This means the edges and corners of the transparencies are not
attached but the middles where the photos sit are. Works just fine that way.
For that smaller transparent pieces with the blue green color I put small
glue dots in the centers of the designs where the screen printing is
    largest.

Great way to demonstrate the difference that strong design principles make. How did you lift the old photos btw?

  • http://www.paperclipping.com Noell

I just pulled the photos off with my hands, letting the paper underneath
tear away from itself and stay stuck to the photos. Does that make sense?

  • toni2

Yes, thanks Noell. I'm always moving forward with my layouts as well. However, if a past layout is super significant to me (ie .wedding photos) or it just plain bothers me too much, I would definitely consider reworking it. Love your revamped layout on this project.

I really appreciated this episode! Sometimes I can't quite put my finger on what needs to change and you've articulated it so well. Do you re-do older pages often? For me, that could be a slippery slope!

  • deanna_munger

Actually, I see you already answered that in another comment. Thanks!
