Doodle to Generate New Ideas

Doodling with Copics in my Scrap Journal

I’m just playing here, but these ideas are germinating into something.

Play = New Ideas.

I’ve learned from this to keep my Copic-play on the right side of the book only, and to space these colored doodles out by a page. The blue and grey from the previous page bled all over my little mushroom colony.

But sometimes those mistakes lead to interesting discoveries. I had doodled this butterfly with a regular ink pen. When I colored it in weeks later, some interesting texture showed through.

Coloring into my Doodles

Do you see it? Compare the black texturing in the wings of the main butterfly with the lack of it on the smaller ones on the left.

Where did it come from? This little owl is showing through into the ink on the butterfly. The poor owl got colored in the wrongest way from behind. But now I know that if I want some interesting texture mixed into my Copic markings, I can draw something on the back side.

Love, love the doodling. You are so neat and a wonderful artist. My butterflies look like my 7 year old niece drew them!

Love the doodles – been listening to the roundtable and hearing how you are using this to get you in a creative mind set. Couple of questions 1) what is the book you are using? 2) how have you decided what colours to get in Copics? I find it overwhelming both in choices and price to know where to start.

You can read about my scrap journal here:

It’s an unwanted book our library was trying to sell for super cheap.

    I bought my copics here:

I HIGHLY recommend them. They gave me excellent individual service. I will
definitely order from them when I get more markers. I think they were less
expensive than the other stores I investigated, too. Plus, their stock is
good. I first tried to order from a store that Jenn McGuire recommended and
they were all out. Also, their sets seemed to be different from the standard
sets (I think). The standard sets seem better to me.

I don’t remember the name of the set I bought, but I think there is a set
that are geared toward crafters/scrapbookers/card-makers, etc. (one set is
for mangga character art, so it has more skin tone shades — they’re great
about making sets geared for different purposes).

I liked that the colors in the craftier set were more vibrant, so that’s the
set I bought. Now that I’ve been using them for a while I’m getting a feel
for which shades I don’t have but need for my purposes, so I’ll be filling
in the gaps over the next month. I know I want some skin tone shades plus
some in-between shades of every color.

    Hope that helps!

What a cool idea to use an old book as a sketch book
