Journaling reads: Dad told me about this conversation he had with you when you said you’re not getting married:
D: What are you gonna do when you get older?
A: I’m gonna live with you guys.
D: Don’t you want to get married?
A: No.
D: Why not?
A (with a tone as if it should be obvious): We got Mom!

That’s right, little man. You got me…You got me wrapped around your little finger and while I hope you’ll find someone else some day who loves you like I love you, I hope your tiny little finger never lets go of your mama.

Journaling reads: My parents used to take us to ghost towns when I was a kid so when I discovered we had this cool mining ghost town just minutes from our house (nestled in the canyons) I knew I would take them and Erin’s family to see it on their next visit to Mesa.

It’s All About The Details

Journaling reads: Trinity – You have great attention to details. You’re afraid of making mistakes. You’re a perfectionist. You’re also extremely independent, so it makes for some interesting situations when I find you trying to do something on your own but you have to come over to me again and again with detail-oriented questions. Today it happened with you making P.B.+J. sandwiches, which you’ve done a hundred times before…

Trinity: Mom! I want to make peanut butter and jelly but this says “jam!” I can’t find any jelly in the fridge.

Mom: That’s what we use because jelly has too much sugar. Sometimes what I buy says “spreadable fruit.” It’s all just used the same way as jelly.

Trinity (you ran out of jam and went to the closet for more but then came back to me, distraught): Mom! This has a totally different word on it that I can’t read and there are CHUNKS in it!

Mom: Yep, honey. This one is the same kind of thing. It’s called, “Preserves.” But it’s all the same. Now relax and go make your sandwich! :)

Journaling reads: It wasn’t until Blake told me how his friends act disgusted by the way we eat (last month) that I realized it could be hard on you kids socially. It’s been over two years now since I decided to eliminate animal-related foods from my diet and cooking and became vegan. Last Auguest Dad decided (on his own, without pressure from me) that he couldn’t eat animals and their by-products anymore, either, which meant your diets became even more vegan than they already were.

Since we don’t force you to be totally vegan and you like my cooking, it didn’t occur to me it could be hard until Blake’s friends acted that way, no matter how good it looked or how often they admit to loving it when they try it. I’m sorry if you get embarrassed and I appreciate that you give us few complaints. I hope you understand that I have to live with integrity. I make this choice for health and love, for the environment, the animals, and for peace.

Battling Bill Maher

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Wow! Thanks for the ENORMOUS support yesterday! We had a huge launch for the Paperclipping Roundtable, and I’m very grateful to all of you for helping us have such a great start.

If you haven’t subscribed in iTunes yet, here’s the link.

Here are some interesting things YOU did for us:

  • As of this morning, we were #1 in the iTunes podcast directory under “Crafts and Hobbies”. Even when you include both video and audio podcasts, we were still #1 in this category.
  • Paperclipping Roundtable Ranked Number 1

  • We were #35 in the top 100 podcasts in the iTunes directory. We’ve never had a show climb that high in the charts before, so it was thrilling to see the Paperclipping Roundtable there after the first day (By the way, you’ll see that Bill Maher is #34, so we’re battling him for the next spot.)!
  • Paperclipping Roundtable Ranked Number 35

  • Several people used our Twitter links to tell their friends about the show. Thank you so much for helping us spread the word!
  • Several listeners wrote comments in the iTunes store, and it looks like we’ve received mostly “Five Star” reviews so far.
  • Also, over the past few days (since soft-launching to the beta testers), we’ve received all kinds of positive feedback via surveys and emails.

For example…

Most of all – it’s fun and funny! Very entertaining with the spontaneous comments…I love the separate segments-especially when you talk about your favorites…

Sounds like friends sitting around the dining table having a chat – and we get to listen in to the conversation.

I LOVE the show. I love that it is casual. It’s like listening to talk radio.

I love. LOVE. the round table aspect of the show. I like listening to you all discuss (visit, chat) about the industry and how it might impact the way we tell our stories.

Love the pic of the week and predictions, also like how it is informal, like hearing the variety of the guests and their perspectives, also directing us to websites where we can find the products reference.

The entire rountable was exciting to me, enjoyed talking about different products and what was enjoyed about them…

I like the casual, friendly chat style, I like the product picks with product reviews and details, all the product info and news…

I liked it all, the loose structure, the different segments, and even Izzy’s input. It’s nice to hear the view of a man who is interested and involved in scrapbooking but is not actually a scrapbooker (I’m assuming he isn’t). Having guests is a great way to hear other people’s views on scrapbooking, especially when they are not there just to try and sell more products. There is another podcast that really gushes about new products and I tire of it as I want a more realistic approach. We can’t all rush out and buy the latest item so honest reviews are more helpful. They don’t have to be mean but just point out what a person can honestly expect from a product. Its okay that not all products suit all people. I enjoyed the other segments too. It was variety of everyone’s hottest picks was great and Noell you had a great tip on how to use those flower books. I wouldn’t have though of that.

Good discussions/topics, very informative, funny too, and great guests.

The topics were interesting. The participants were entertaining and came across as very friendly – fun to listen to. A show you can listen to while doing other things – whereas Paperclipping Live (which I also really enjoy) is something I sit down to watch – yes I know one is audio and one is video : ) It’s nice having two different kinds of shows like that to enjoy in different ways.

I like variety of topics, guests, relevance of topics. It was an engaging hour. I liked the length.

Love it all. Love that it is audio so we can scrap and listen without having to be glued to the screen. Love the guest spot. Love the news. It is awesome!

I really liked how “natural” it was. Loved listening to the conversation style. My favorite part was the item of the week segment.

I really liked the program concept and format and presentation. Noell is a perfect and most credible hostess. Having an opportunity to hear from the “best-of-the-best” in the scrapbooking world while staying at home is great. The segment topics were great. I particularly enjoyed “pick of the week” and the “forcast” segments. It helps guide me in considering future purchases and gives me a broader picture of the industry that I could not otherwise have.

I love the group of women (and Izzy!) giving different opinions about and guests who are active/experts in the industry. I also loved the industry news and weekly picks.

I love love love the tool suggestions…

I liked the detailed discussion about the product picks – not just your pick but why you liked it.

We also received several suggestions for improving the show, and we’re definitely going to make some changes based on the feedback we received.

Still, we’re THRILLED from the big response. But this is just the beginning. We have LOTS of plans for the show in the future, and we know that our show would be nothing without an audience, so thank you so much for listening and telling your friends about it.

Please help us spread the word today too. We need to maintain the momentum. Here are links that make it easy to share the show:

If you know someone who loves to scrapbook, why not suggest they try the show. After all, it’s fun, and it’s free!

Paperclipping 109 – A Use For Old Tags

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

paperclipping 109

If you have an over-abundance of tags in your scrap stash, this week’s episode will give you a fun idea for using them.

This video is available to members only. Learn about a membership here.

Here are pictures of the layouts I featured in the video, along with journaling and supply information…

The colors got funky on this one…my apologies!

Journaling reads: Blake’s been singing this humorous jingle from the comedy, “Nacho Libre.” [the song: "I eat some bugs. I eat some grass. I use my hand to wipe my...tears."] The kids giggle so much at this song and Israel and I couldn’t tell if they knew what word the song actually implied. Israel finally asked Blake, “Do you know why that song is so funny? Blake, with a suspicious look on his face said, “Because he ate bugs and grass and that makes him cry.” We agreed verbally with Blake and left the kids to their innocence.

Supplies: patterned paper (Creative Imaginations) * tags + wire (Stampin’ Up) * journal spot peeking out above left journal block + acrylic heart (Heidi Swapp) * chipboard (Thickers for American Crafts) * rub-on’s (My Mind’s Eye) * plastic flower (Prima) * button and ribbon from unknown source.

Beautiful You @ 8 Yrs

12×12 layout
Beautiful You
Journaling to Trinity reads: You are one of those rare people who are naturally beautiful both inside and out. You have so much empathy and it drives you to take care of others. But you don’y do it at your own expense or when it compromises your integrity. You’re also unbelievably responsible, always remembering everything and giving the rest of us desperately needed reminders since, unlike you, we forget everything (we don’t know about Aiden yet).

You are a loyal friend. People love you and it’s easy to see why…You’re a fun and very lovable girl.

I love doing layouts with lots of scraps like this one because while I’m scrapbooking I get to enjoy happy memories of past scrapbooking times.

Supplies: Cardstock (Bazzill) * patterned paper (Basic Grey, s.e.i., Creative Imaginations, green paper-unknown) * lace paper ribbon (Creative Imaginations) * tags + wire (Stampin’ Up) * rub-on’s (My Mind’s Eye) * vintage key.

Tag Layouts Closeups
I love these old keys (left) with interesting shapes to them. The shape is sort of flowery. On the right is a 3-dimensional plastic flower sitting on top of a button (thank-you glue dots), sitting on top of an acrylic heart outlined in brown ink.
Hyman Tribe Closeup
That green butterfly is a rub-on, but because I wanted it’s wings to hang off a raised tag, I didn’t actually rub it on. I glued it with its plastic to the tag with Diamond Glaze instead.

Paperclipping 108 - How to Make Rounded Corners in Photoshop Elements

Do you remember the collage of heritage photos I made for a layout about my dad’s crazy 1940’s baby stroller? There was a request for me to make a tutorial on how to wrap a collage of photos with a frame like I did on that layout. Today’s episode for the Paperclipping Members will walk you through it step-by-step using Photoshop Elements. The good news is it’s very easy!

Below is the one I made in today’s tutorial…

Changes Are Coming Soon

Israel had his last day at work on Friday (followed by a second going away party!) and we are so excited to start a new schedule and format with Paperclipping. Because of these changes, there will be no video tutorial at the beginning of the week. We’re not yet sure when it will air–during the week or on the following weekend–just keep your eyes open and don’t despair if there is an initial bit of quiet on the blog.

One thing you can expect is that I’ll be making most announcements in the Paperclipping forum and in the newly formatted weekly Paperclipping Insider (sign up at the upper right corner), rather than here on the blog. So if you haven’t signed up for either of those, now is the time. =)

Paperclipping Live Group Project

Would you like to participate in assembling a minibook with me? A minibook that you could give as a gift for Christmas (or not)? I have put together a collection for the Unkit club and I will be making a minibook with the products I chose. On October 28, for Paperclipping Live, we will assemble the books together.

If you’d like to participate, head over to the Unkit to see the collection of products you’ll need for your book. You only need one of everything (except the adhesive and the white pen, which Sudie added–I won’t be using those). What’s cool about the Unkit is that you don’t have to buy the entire kit. If you already have some of the products, you can skip those and just get what you don’t have. If you have paper, or brads or ribbons that are close or that you like better, you can use them instead–only get what you want or need.

Plus, I was really happy to see that Sudie is providing a coupon for 40% off of one item. Score!

If you’d like to make the album with me, make sure you order the supplies in time for them to arrive before the 28th. Click here to see the collection and order. (Just a note: I do not benefit from you ordering this collection).

The Oct. 28th Paperclipping Live Minibook Topic: Electronic Love Letters–in other words, email. Who do you love that you also email? Since all of my siblings are spread around the country, email is the only way we are able to talk as a group. And some of our emails are really funny. Each page in the minibook we’ll be assembling during Paperclipping Live will document a conversation over email.

You can decorate your album, without using my topic, but if you are going to use the topic, you might want to print up some email conversations on white cardstock ahead of time. You can also gather some photos of whoever it is you’ve been emailing. You may pick just one person, or an entire group of people–whatever works for you will work for this book.

And lastly, make sure you have some good adhesive, cutting tools, sandpaper, and perhaps some smaller letter stickers that are already sitting in your stash (in addition to the chipboard letters I’ve got in the collection). To adhere paper to the chipboard album, I recommend either photo-tape and a good glue stick, or PVA glue.

Paperclipping Live This Week

Don’t forget that Dina Wakley will be my guest on the show this Tuesday at 6:30 pm Pacific Standard Time to talk about art journals.

Apologies For Last Night’s Paperclipping Live

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

Apparently, last night’s show didn’t record. I realize many of you prepared your stories and photos with the plan to watch the recording today. So, I’m going to make it up to you. Next week we’ll cover the same subject, but let’s take it a little further. Let’s plan for even more participation.

If you are willing to call into the show to share your story and photo next week, please email me. I would love to talk with two or three people more thoroughly about how you feel about your story, and which colors, patterns, and symbols/embellishments might help you communicate.

Whether you are one of those that shared with us in the chat last night or not, you are welcome to call in through Skype next week. I would love to have at least two people call in, so if you are interested and can be prepared with at least one photo and a story in mind, please email me…

This Week’s Video Tutorial

We have a free episode that is almost ready to post and it will be up soon!

Back-To-School

Is there anyone else that still hasn’t started or finished their back-to-school layouts? We’ll end the series this week after a few more posts. I hope this series has helped you identify how to make pages repeating events more meaningful and more enjoyable.

New series: Reclaim Yourself

I am someone who loves, adores–thrives on–having lots of time alone. Yes, I am very social, but I have also always needed to have a lot of time to myself and my attention-demanding thoughts.

When I was younger I could shut away the world and go to my room for hours at a time. When I got my first car I loved to take long rides down winding Kansas roads and fed off the eerie feeling of being totally isolated with a horizon that seemed to stretch to eternity.

Then I had kids.

Almost eleven years later, all three of my children are in full-day school, and I am once again enjoying long stretches of quiet, wonderful, alone time. Last week I took advantage of the chance to tell some of my own stories and explore my more artistic side. And that will be the focus of the next series.

Toward the end of the week, we will begin a “Reclaim Yourself” series. Not only will we scrapbooking layouts about ourselves, but we’ll dig into some art, as well. I am so excited for this and I have enough content that we could take it way into October, so I’ll probably have to save some of it for a different focus-on-the-self week.

Are you ready to pay attention to you?

Paperclipping Live

Even though we are technically still in the Back-To-School series, we’re going to kick off the Reclaim Yourself series on Tuesday night for Paperclipping Live. I will lead you through the beginning of a layout about YOU. To participate with me, you need to identify a story about yourself that you want to scrap. Be ready with a picture or a set of pictures. The photo(s) does not necessarily have to have you in it.

If you don’t already have any photos to work with, you might want to try one of the following:

1. Take a picture of yourself in your bathroom mirror.
2. Take a picture of your {insert modest body part here}.
3. Crop yourself out of a group photo.
4. If your story is about something you typically do or enjoy, take a picture of an object with which you do that activity.
5. Set your camera up with the timer and take a picture of yourself in action. This involves some trial and error, but it’s fun.

Here is an example of each of those (in the same order)…

For our live event, you do not need to choose paper ahead of time because choosing will be part of our process during the show. Just have your papers and products easily accessible, if possible. You will probably also need scratch paper and a pencil or pen to make notes.

We will not take a layout to completion. The point of this Paperclipping Live is to get you to go inside yourself and analyze what colors, patterns, or other visuals, will help you create the feeling you have about your story or layout theme. We’ll be focusing on the process of preparing the layout, but won’t necessarily finish it during the show.

We’ll also be depending a lot on chat-participation, so please register and be ready to share! The show starts at 6:30 pm, PST, on Tuesday night. Click here at that time to participate.

The Paperclipping Challenge

Don’t forget that we now have monthly challenges to help you use the principles and techniques we discussed the month before. Some of you have uploaded your layouts and projects to our Flickr gallery. Others of you are still working. If you haven’t started anything, there is still time. You must post your layout by the end of the day on September 23. That’s a whole week away.

I will choose one person who I think most exemplified their chosen topic and highlight them on the Paperclipping blog. Maybe that will be you? =)

You can read the details of the challenge by clicking here.
