Paperclipping Live Event for National Scrapbook Day

Monday, April 12th, 2010

May 1, 2010
1-3 pm PST

http://www.paperclipping.com/live

We will be having a live (internet) Paperclipping event for National Scrapbook Day this year! Among all the fun we’ll share that day, I would like to invite you to join audience member, Roxane Apple, and me in helping children under state custody to make Life Books. You can do that with extra supplies or products that you’re no longer in love with. I invited Roxane to share how this works and what it is:

“Children in the custody of Social Services create Life Books to remember their lives and the people they have lived with. Life Books are simple scrapbooks the social workers, foster families, and adoptive families put together with the children. Life Books are also used as a form of therapy, to get to know the children, and to understand their situations. They are also used to help the children feel a sense of belonging. The children take the books with them as they move through Social Services. Scrapbook supplies are used to create these books, but Social Service offices don’t have budgets for the supplies they need.

They can use anything you want to give … tools you don’t use anymore; a sticker sheet that only has one sticker left on it; pens you never use; things you want to get rid of so you can have room for something else; whole sheets of paper; good size scraps you don’t want to keep; freebies you’ve received but won’t ever use; supply storage containers you don’t want anymore … you name it!”

scrapbook_scraps

Between now and May 1st, I am asking you to:

  1. Gather scrapbook-related items you would like to donate
  2. Find out who your local contact person is within Social Services (information below)
  3. Weigh your items (this is just for the Paperclipping event)
  4. Arrange to deliver your items.

On National Scrapbook Day you can report to Paperclipping the weight of your donation and we will announce the grand total during our live event!

Erin Bassett provided this web page where many of you will be able to find your local contact person:

If your local information is not available there, or if you run into a dead end, Roxane explained how to find your contact person…

“Google or use a similar search engine to put in your county and state with the words Social Services or Human Services. Each agency is defined a little differently and it is dependent on the size and how many counties they serve. You may be their first call of someone offering donations of this type so you may need to do a little talking to get to the right person. From there you can arrange how you’ll deliver your donation.

I happen to live closer to the woman that works for the Denver County Social Services office then I live to the office she works out of, so I either meet her somewhere or take the donations to her house. The first time I donated to her she was a leery because no one had ever donated scrapbook supplies before, and because I gave her a lot of supplies she was also a little overwhelmed. Soon the shock on her face turned to pure gratitude!”

Once you have found your contact person, please feel free to share the info with others in your area by leaving a comment on this post.

Album Details

Album:
The Tinkering Ink Peekaboo Album I used doesn’t seem to be in stock anymore. Hopefully you’ll use something you already have anyway but if you’re looking for a mini with shapes punched out like mine, the closest thing I can find to it is this one, which is on clearance right now.

Album Color:
By experimenting, I got a lovely mottled yellow on my pages that reminds me of colored Easter eggs. You know how colored eggs never come out smooth and perfect like they do on the cover of magazines?. I love the uneven colored-eggs look on my pages. Here’s how I got it:

  • Painted 2 layers of Golden’s Gesso. (You could try white acrylic paint if you don’t have gesso).
  • Sprayed a layer of Lemon Meringue Glimmer Mist and blended it in.
  • Spritzed some uneven splotches of Lemon Grass Glimmer Mist. I rubbed the Lemon Grass with my blending tool. The foam applicator left a lot of “bubbling” in the mist, I think because of the gesso, and then set the bubbles and splotches with a heat tool.

Handmade flowers:
I made my large turquoise flower out of Tim Holtz Grunge Board. To color the petals I painted two layers of gesso, then sprayed and dried multiple layers of Patina Glimmer Mist.

It turns out that the gesso was not holding the Patina dye color, so it came out light, although very beautifully glimmery. Liz Hicks from Tattered Angels suggested using Making Memories Spotlight acrylic paint on chipboard or grunge board if you want the dye color to show more vibrantly.

The tiny paper flowers and the large flower were inspired by the artist, Alisa Burke. The orange paperclipped flower is from Paperclipping Episode #118, which is now archived, but available to our Members.

Why I No Longer Accept Free Products From Companies

Monday, March 15th, 2010

I wrote the following letter to my newsletter subscribers as I was leaving the Craft & Hobby Association Trade Show last January. I need a public place to post it, so if you already read this, please excuse the redundancy. The next Member’s Tutorial will be available very soon!

* * *

Something happened when Izzy and I were covering the Craft & Hobby Association trade show that inspired us to make a major business decision. It’s a decision that affects my relationship with you as a scrapbooker. We walked the thousands of booths, choosing which ones had products and demo’s I thought would be of most interest to you, sometimes having to turn down requests for video coverage because we only have time to share what we think you’ll want most. Many of the manufacturers handed me packets of their products, hoping they will end up on projects that appear in my tutorials. This is a common practice in the industry — I don’t mean to make it sound like I’m anything special.

I have mixed emotions whenever it happens. On the one hand there’s the rush that we all feel whenever we’re offered something free. Especially when it’s something we already wanted, right? On the other hand, there was a creeping discomfort I couldn’t explain and really didn’t take the time to try to identify.

I made a comment to Izzy about all the talk at the trade show by scrapbook designers and press members needing to ship all their freebies home. He had an idea that, at first, I didn’t like. . .not after My Mind’s Eye had just offered to send me some products from their new mini-book line, a line that almost made me salivate all over their floor. But as Izzy and I talked about the possible impact of his idea, I realized I wanted to do it for sure. And all that day, as packets stuffed with beautiful scrappy goodness slipped into my hand, I slipped them back to their rightful owners and explained our new business decision.

A Major Business Decision

I am no longer accepting free product for use in my scrapbooking and papercrafting projects.

I am not aware of anyone else in the industry doing this. Let me tell you why I decided to do it and what it means for you. Those who have been with me long know that I am quite honest with my opinions about scrapbook products, stores, and magazines. But even I recognize that it’s hard not to be at least slightly biased about a product that you didn’t have to buy yourself, especially when you know that that company will probably want to give you even more if you give their products good coverage.

It’s important for you to know that the products I use and recommend are products I like enough to actually pay for them. Myself. You will always know that I cannot be bought or sold by any company. How is that for enabling Paperclipping to offer you the best recommendations in the industry? Several people told me this is crazy because it’s an expensive decision to make. But that’s a price I’m willing to pay and a price I’m willing to pay for you.

Once again, this is a case where the Paperclipping Members are the ones who are making all of this possible. Much appreciation to our Paperclipping Members.
