Day 14:

This page was all about color balance. The reds in the patterned paper were too warm for the cooler red and blue tones in the photo. To make the photo work with the paper I added red Stickles glitter to three of the flowers in a triangle around the photo. That red glitter matches the ornament (it might be hard to see the glitter in the photo) and now the warms and cools like totally fine.

I also wanted to bring the cream color from the sticker, and the white from the flourish and #14, over to the other side. That’s why I chose the white trim for the floral chipboard page and the cream colored tag. Here’s what the page looked like before I added the content:

Day 15:

This day was all about finishing up a huge day of work before letting go (mostly) and taking a long holiday break. I wrote a note about it and inserted a printed up version of part of the work I did that day, which was to finish up my Holiday Photography Email Course for the Paperclipping Members.

Day 16 & 17

The Day 16 page is cut from one of those page protectors from Becky Higgins’s Project 365 album last year.

On the 17th, Izzy and I finished the bulk of the Christmas shopping so I wrote a little note about that and stuck the kids’ Christmas lists inside. They were actually pretty telling lists. Trinity requested all kinds of stuff like “lots of love” and “a delicious breakfast.”

Coming Soon

This week’s Paperclipping episode will be available by the end of the day today (hopefully sooner than that). Please watch for the newsletter soon if you’re signed up. Also, keep an eye open for some hints about our new upcoming show, The Paperclipping Roundtable.

This week’s episode has been released for the Paperclipping Members. If you’re not a member, you can watch a trailer of the tutorial by clicking on the video above.

In this in-depth video I show you step-by-step in Photoshop Elements how to…

Isolate a subject in your photo so you can give it/him/her special attention.

Boost the color of your subject while making everything else black and white.

Make your subject stand out more by darkening your background and boosting the highlights in your subject.

Make your subject stand out by blurring the background.

Smooth the edges of your isolated subject so it doesn’t have that yucky “cut-out” look.

You’ll be able to do the above with your own Halloween zombies, their bloody sores, or with cute little girls at tea parties (below)–whatever you think needs special attention above its background. Check out this Before/After example where I left Blake’s sores and tongue a subtle red and brought him forward from his background, then see the layouts below for two examples:

To see what it takes to become a Paperclipping Member so you can watch episodes like this one, please visit the Membership Information Page.

Below are the layouts I featured in the episode…

The Making Of A Zombie

Journaling to Blake reads: Your makeup is on and you have no problem getting your act together, getting into character. I love how you love playing the part.

Girly Tea Time

Journaling to Trinity reads: I had such a fun day with you at this tea party. We looked at art on the street, shopped a cute gift shop and tried hats and teas. Fun girly day.

Want to try it? Once you do it you’ll want to do it all the time. It’s fun. Enjoy!

Do you wish you could break away from the matchy lines of paper products so you can more easily come up with your own color palettes for scrapbook pages and other papercraft projects? Today’s episode is free (you don’t need a membership to watch it) and I’ll take you through my process of picking out the colors for the layout below…

Journaling reads: We met through the internet because of our mutual hobby and close geography but we became real friends because of each other’s creativity and passion. With so much similar and so much different in our styles…we better define our creative styles because of each other. I love having an artistic friends like Dedra Long. She inspires me.

Thank you to Stampin’ Up! who provided the stamps for all of the stamped pieces. The ink and ribbon is also Stampin’ Up!.

Note: Today is Dedra Long’s birthday! Happy birthday, girlfriend. I hope it’s a great one.

Now, back to business…

I find that complicated ideas usually make more sense when I review them later because of other things I’ve learned since my first time around. That’s one of the benefits of having a Paperclipping Membership and having access to the archives. Episodes 59 & 60 will make more sense after watching today’s episode. And today’s episode will make more sense after watching 59 & 60 again. It’s a process.

If you’re a Member and feel this is an area you want to work on, I recommend you re-watch these two other episodes from the archives after watching today’s tutorial…

Paperclipping 59 – Mixing Patterned Paper
Paperclipping 60 QT – Clashing Papers

To find out what it takes to have a Paperclipping Membership, please click here.

Update: Below is a layout I made using the papers I picked in episode 59. I just got around to finishing it…

Here is the free trailer for today’s episode of Paperclipping for our Members. This episode is all about color and how to mix your own colors from acrylic paint using just a handful of base hues. Even if you’re not into paint, this episode should help you with color in general. One thing to note is that video is not able to pick up the subtleties of color that our eyes see, so you’ll have to rely more on what I explain than what you can see in the video during some of the color mixing portions.

I’ve posted the layouts from today’s episode below…

Red Boots

12×12 Layout

Journaling written to Aiden: Man, do I love you in those boots! We bought them for our upcoming trip-camping during the Monsoon Season. I never expected you’d want to wear them everyday: rain or shine * shorts or pants * and even to school. You get a lot of attention when you wear them, which probably makes them even more irresistibly cool to you.

**The polka dot and gold patterned papers are quite old scraps from a time when most everything came in a grungy-brown. Until I did this page, whenever I saw that paper, I felt bogged down b/c it’s so dark and heavy. Look how great it looks, though, with vibrant red, yellow-gold, and bright white!

Do you still have a lot of heavy browns from a few years back? Try using it in small amounts with other papers that make you happy.

After The Feast

2-page 12×12 Layout

I love how flexible these templates are. I think next time I’ll try making three panels instead of two. I’m excited to see what some of you do with the template.
