How to get ideas for handmade backgrounds

Design principles that make it all work together

Examples of handmade backgrounds

Also, if you’re not subscribed to the free version of Paperclipping in iTunes, here’s a link that will take you there.

With so many layouts appearing in this episode, I’ll only post the four new ones here but you can see the three that I’ve featured in previous episodes here, here, and here.

He Makes Me Laugh

Journaling written to my husband reads: She said, “I can stick my tongue up my nose. Watch…” So I watched, and she totally did it. I was in partial shock but I kept a smile on my face. And that’s when you leaned into my neck and said — fairly loudly — “I’m glad you can’t do that.” And you made me laugh. Hard. Just like you always do.

Journaling reads: Loved that you did it your own way…a simple wedding with family and your closest friends out in nature. Loved Larry’s talk about having someone to come home to. Loved watching your beautiful happy faces.

Blue Prima Medicci Flower

Journaling directed to my mom reads: This is how I see you in most of my memories as a kid. I actually have hazier visuals from an even younger time when I was two to four years old and we lived in Arizona. At that young age I remember big hands reaching down to me. Big to my small size. Safe hands dropping down from huge heights to pick me up or to give me a gumball from the high closet shelf. I remember how you were so tall, towering over me. And when you held me I was high above the floor.

I remember sitting on your lap in church and playing with the necklace around your neck, your hair an amber shade, long and wavy down the sides.

A few years later we moved to the house where Dad took this picture of you…you standing in our backyard on Lucinda Dr. in Whittier, CA. My memories are a little less hazy at this time with a little more perspective. Your face is a lot more clear, your hands less dominant. I remember you just like this picture. A naturally beautiful mommy.

Journaling reads: You four girls backstage, being young beautiful ballerinas, playing together while you wait your turn. You girls danced together–grew together and performed together–for at least three years (was it more than that?). You all stuck it out with two hard teachers from Russia and did a fab job shining on stage.

Liz shares a lot of tips for using Glimmer Mist, shows how to use their screens both as masks and stamps, how you can mix multiple mist colors, and she shows what their 2-step stamping process is. There are a lot of great tips in this 10-min. demo.

You’ll get a great idea of Donna’s fun personality in this video. Make sure you watch to the end so you can see the completed project.
Here is the free trailer for today’s episode of Paperclipping for our Members. This episode is all about color and how to mix your own colors from acrylic paint using just a handful of base hues. Even if you’re not into paint, this episode should help you with color in general. One thing to note is that video is not able to pick up the subtleties of color that our eyes see, so you’ll have to rely more on what I explain than what you can see in the video during some of the color mixing portions.

Do you love mini’s? Do you wish you loved mini’s? In this episode I share a minibook idea, an organizational tip, and a technique. This episode is for Paperclipping Members, so if you’re trying to watch it but can’t, you can learn about the Paperclipping Membership by clicking here.

Below are some pictures of the minibook in the video…

You * Me

This book cover is made by Maya Road and is 9×9 inches. The chipboard pages inside are 8×8.

I found the vintage pieces (the clock face and drawer knob) at my local vintage scrapbooking store, Mystic Paper. The wire hanger is from there as well, but I’m pretty sure it’s not vintage. The spinner arrow on the clock is definitely not vintage…it’s made by Tim Holtz.

Want To See More?

You can see more pictures in the photo set I added to my Flickr page. I expect to have a lot more of this project completed next week and will add more photos then.

I know many of you are working on minibooks for your moms for Mother’s Day so I hope this episode gives you some inspiration and help. If you’re not gifting a book, consider making one about your relationship with one of your children. That’s what my book is about. I’ll share more in an upcoming episode.

* * *
Did you see that Jana Oliveira won the Paperclipping Monthly Challenge for March? You can see her winning page at The Crop Circle.

My items are in a places that make sense for me now, so I have lots of tips to share…tips that are more like principles so they’ll help you make your own space work for you (as opposed to me).
