Beautiful You

beautiful_you_@8yrs

Journaling to Trinity reads: You are one of those rare people who are naturally beautiful both inside and out. You have so much empathy and it drives you to take care of others. But you don’y do it at your own expense or when it compromises your integrity. You’re also unbelievably responsible, always remembering everything and giving the rest of us desperately needed reminders since, unlike you, we forget everything (we don’t know about Aiden yet).

You are a loyal friend. People love you and it’s easy to see why…You’re a fun and very lovable girl.

Self Expression

Self-Expression

Hyman Tribe

hyman_tribe
Journaling reads:

Blake’s been singing this humorous jingle from the comedy, “Nacho Libre.” [the song: "I eat some bugs. I eat some grass. I use my hand to wipe my...tears."] The kids giggle so much at this song and Israel and I couldn’t tell if they knew what word the song actually implied. Israel finally asked Blake, “Do you know why that song is so funny? Blake, with a suspicious look on his face said, “Because he ate bugs and grass and that makes him cry.” We agreed verbally with Blake and left the kids to their innocence.

Opposite Sets Of Genes

opposite_sets_of_genes

Journaling reads:
Blake: happy at home – Trin: has to get out
Trin: hands-on artist – Blake: techie geek
Blake: designs graphic explosions – Trin: draws flowers, fairies
Trin: organized and level-headed – Blake: a slave to passionate ideas
Blake: expressive with words – Trin: expressive with visual arts

You both look at things and react to things so differently. Sometimes your differences may perplex each other. But you also share a mutual admiration for each other’s gifts and differences. It’s very cool.

Five Things That Could Be Missing From Your Scrapbooks

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Memorabilia 924 - Version 2
Ever since I went through my old-school scrapbooks from high school and college a year or two ago, I’ve been on an escalating (though quiet) rampage regarding Life-Stuff — in other words, memorabilia and ephemera. I realized I enjoy my old scrapbooks — void of cute papers and embellishments, but packed full of stuff from my life — as much as my current ones, which were heavier on the “cute,” but lighter on the “life.”

Some memorabilia can tell the parts of the stories that our words and photos leave out.
Skeptical? You’ll see some examples below.

Life-Stuff Worth Keeping

In addition to the obvious ticket stubs, play bills, and post cards, there are other types of memorabilia/ephemera you might not have considered. Here are five qualities that compel me to save some memorabilia while tossing the others:

1) Tells something about your life.

While the left pocket in the memorabilia protector below holds the common concert memorabilia, the pocket on the right is holding ephemera from my favorite clothing store. Those items say a little something about me right now. Eventually these pieces will move onto a layout or mini-book.
Memorabilia 916

Some items tell a more subtle story about things that are going on in your life. At the end of the school year, Aiden’s teacher sent home a bunch of his first grade schoolwork. As I fished through the pieces, deciding what to toss and what to keep, I found the page below in a Valentines book where Aiden drew a picture of himself handing his great grandmother a heart.

At first I thought it was strange that he depicted Grandma Holt in bed, until I put the clues together and remembered that the month before he drew it, we had been visiting her in hospice. She died a couple weeks before Valentine’s Day. This drawing means that our visits, and Aiden’s relationship with Grandma, had enough of an impact on him to include it in his Valentine’s story two weeks later.
Memorabilia 903

2) Captures handwriting

The handwriting alone doesn’t do it for me, since we’re talking about collecting current ephemera, and there are a lot of possible pieces to save based on the handwriting criteria alone. But coupled with something else on the list, it’s very cool. Below is a story in Blake’s handwriting. He is a natural writer and I noticed that he used story-writing as a way to deal with a frustrating scenario involving a sibling.
Memorabilia 911
Actually, I’ve noticed he’s not the only one in my family to deal with situations this way. I may (or may not) want to combine these stories about various family members into one scrapbook story about family tendencies.
Memorabilia 906

3) Demonstrates learning and progress of a skill or natural talent

Aiden is also a writer — actually all five of us are — and after he wrote the “book” below, he pointed out to me that he included a problem and a solution in his plot-line, something he had recently learned.
Memorabilia 908

4) Demonstrates a person’s interests, natural tendencies, personality

Trinity draws almost every day, and most of what she draws has bright colors, hearts, and rainbows. I want to share her common art subject in a future scrapbook page, and I decided to save one that also included characters from her favorite movie, Hairspray.
Memorabilia 901

5) Shows a relationship

Below is something I saved that my Dad wrote to me, way back in 1980.
Memorabilia 919

When I was around fourteen, I decided to save this playful piece of paper my sister and I occupied our minds with during church. I could just journal something like, “My sister and I loved to play and tease, even during church,” but that doesn’t say it the way this does . . .
Memorabilia 922

And this is something I found in a paper pad. It’s the score sheet kept by one of my kids’ favorite babysitters from a game she played with Trinity. I love that Emily’s teasing personality will be forever implanted in our memories with this one piece of paper.
Memorabilia 913

You Voted!

I’m happy to say that audience interest in tutorial topics were spread almost evenly among all four of the possibilities I shared last week. This means I’ll probably eventually do all four of them over the next six months (or sooner). I did count up the votes, though, and there was a clear winner. A majority of you voted on this episode topic:

Mini Scrap Clusters
Fill empty spaces with clusters of leftover scraps of papers, ribbons, etc.

Choose The Next Paperclipping Video Tutorial!

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

New Garage Studio
Hi, again!

Before we talk about the next tutorial, I want to tell you what Jamie Leija is doing right now with the last one. She is a Paperclipping Member and she watched this week’s video tutorial, Task Batch Minibooking. She thought of an involved project she had been wanting to do, and decided the process I introduced in the episode would help her accomplish it. Check out the comment she left on the blog, plus her mid-progress report . . .

This is a awesome tutorial Noell!! I’ve watched the video twice and am just now going to sit down and start a mini album of a trip to Bali that I took a few years back. I’m making 2 copies of this, one for me and one for the friend who went with me. This is a fabulous concept and the perfect tutorial for what I had already set out to accomplish this week!!

Progress report: It’s been 2 hours and I now have 12 pages ready to be decorated! Totally loving this process!

Congratulations, Jamie!

It’s so exciting for me to see how the methods and concepts in the video tutorials are helping scrapbookers to share their stories! I’m still amazed by how quickly I was able to make the two mini-books I shared in the episode, especially when one of them is such a long book.

And I hope you don’t mind me sharing this Twitter message from Avital of Creativity Prompts, regarding this same episode:

“If you’re not a Paperclipping member already, this episode alone is a good enough reason to join.”
–Avital Gertner Samet

Thank you,Taly!

Each and every Paperclipping tutorial is the type of content I wished I had received from the in-person classes and workshops I tried taking a number of years back. Those classes varied in price, but individually, they were in the price range of a Paperclipping Membership. Right now a membership will give you access to 150 episodes plus two more each month!

That is a lot of “class” for the price of one! Please check out the Membership Information Page if you are not yet a member, and you are interested in the Paperclipping Video Tutorials.

Help Me Choose The Next Episode

Not long ago, I asked you to tell me episode topics you would love to see. I counted up the similar requests, along with the suggestions that got a thumbs-up by others, and found the most popular topics. Below are four topics I’ve put together based on those requests. Please leave a comment and tell me which one you’re most interested in. The winning topic will become the next tutorial! Here are the choices:

  1. One product – multiple ways and styles. Use the same product on a number of different layouts and projects in different ways and with different styles to convey different stories, meanings, moods. This will demonstrate how you can get different results from one product.
  2. Compare the different inks on the market. What are the differences and when would you choose each: Archival, Distress, Alcohol, Staz-on, watermark, etc.
  3. Design Principle: Use contrast to Layer Items. I’ve done a lot of episodes on layering embellishments. This one will concentrate on the specific principle of using contrast, and will show both traditional and digital examples.
  4. Mini Scrap Clusters. Fill empty spaces with clusters of leftover scraps of papers, ribbons, etc.

I’m excited to record the episode that gets the most votes! Please cast yours by telling me in the comments!

July Monthly Challenge Highlight: Jamie Leija!

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Let me start with this: WOW! What an amazing group of layouts and stories that are on display at the July Monthly Challenge. There are a lot of great pages to inspire you. Check them out!

Congratulations to Jamie Leija, who submitted the page we chose to highlight this month! She submitted a response to challenge topic #1: Altered Backgrounds
j_leija

Jamie’s Explanation:

I was very inspired by the colors of the photo, the yellow in my sweater, the blue in my mama’s shirt and that so bright green in the plant behind us. I have these favorite masks that I use over and over again, but the thing is, they aren’t actually masks. Prima makes these great felt stems, that are beautiful in their own right, but just screamed mask to me the moment I saw them. I arranged them on my background paper and hit them with green, yellow and blue Maya Mist and outlined a few of the edges to give them dimension. The title of this layout is actually from a song lyric of Taylor Swift’s. I’d already decided to use that photo of me and Mama when I realized that this song would be a great way to journal about us, this day and our propensity for giggling.

Journaling reads: “We were in Rome, touring the Papal Residence, soaking up the gorgeous Italian sun, and were just taking a break from all the walking we’d been doing. I have no idea why we were laughing. Who knows with the two of us! We’re always giggling about something or other, which is why this is my favorite photo of the two of us. What a wonderful day to remember and what equally wonderful memories of so many seemingly small moments with my Mama.”

I love you for giving me your [Asian] eyes. For staying back and watching me shine. I didn’t know if you knew. So I’m taking this chance to say…that I had the best day, with you, today.

What the judges had to say:

It was the colors that first grabbed our attention — bright and bold, more heavily sprayed toward the bottom of the page, emphasizing the colors Jamie loves in her picture. On a closer look, here is what we found…

  • Repetition, Continuity, Contrast

The grid design is unexpected on such a playfully themed layout, but it works well and is balanced by the plants and mists used for the altered background. We like that there is continuity in the repeating grid pattern, from the two different pieces of patterned paper, to the grid of patterned papers plus the photo itself. While it seems scary to cut that picture like that, the faces fit nicely into their own squares and she actually highlighted them this way.

She chose a good mix of patterns to group together: organics, geometrics, solids (or almost solid), loose patterns and tight patterns.

  • Sections, Lines, Titles
A great element on the page is the zig-zag strip of paper that not only anchors the grid but also creates a line at the third mark and a separate space for the title. And the title — the title work is fabulous with its mix of size and colors.
  • Balance
Jamie has balance around the entire page: a visual triangle of black text (three spots) and a visual triangle of butterflies that add dimension. She also balanced an artsy organic look (splashes of color mist with plant-like masks) with a bit of linear design (the grids and title-work).
  • VIsual Mood-Expression
Overall it creates a happy, carefree feel balanced with stability. We think that’s pretty great visual story-telling, considering the story she revealed through her journaling.
