2010 was a Big Year for Paperclipping!

A Toast To 2007.JPG

2010 was a fantastic year for Paperclipping!

What do we have to celebrate right now?

  1. Experienced huge growth in 2010
  2. Launched the Paperclipping Roundtable
  3. Launched the Paperclipping Digi Show
  4. Honored with Most Influential Scrapbooker award
  5. Paperclipping Life Books donation drive
  6. Built a new recording studio

OMG! Huge Growth!

Visits to Paperclipping more than doubled in 2010. Take a look:

2009: 131,287 visits to this website
2010: 280,851 visits to this website

Additionally, more and more people are becoming Paperclipping Members. In fact, 1,570 people have signed up to be Paperclipping Members. We’re so excited to see that our membership has grown to this size.

Our members are the most loyal and cherished audience members. If you’re not a member, and you enjoy the Roundtable or other things we produce, you should kiss a member and tell them thank you, because the members make everything we do possible. ;-)

7,056 scrapbookers are currently receiving email updates to stay in touch with the almost daily activities around here.

The Paperclipping Roundtable

January 4037
One year ago this week we launched the Paperclipping Roundtable! It has been downloaded 90,670 times!

There was nothing like this in the industry. Some were skeptical as to whether an audio show made sense for something as visual as scrapbooking. It definitely made sense. According to Stacy Julian, founder of Simple Scrapbook Magazines and Big Picture Classes, Paperclipping has “changed the way we talk about scrapbooking.”

In fact, some of the industry’s most loved people like Ali Edwards, Cathy Zielske, and Stacy herself have jumped on board to be a part of the show!

The Paperclipping Digi Show

The Paperclipping Roundtable was such a huge hit, even among digital scrapbookers, that we launched a second audio show — the Paperclipping Digi Show!

Steph from the Daily Digi hosts this show. She’s amazing, and we love her. Her choices in guests and topics are awesome! Digi Show numbers? So far, this ‘new kid on the block’ has been downloaded 43,323 times!

Most Influential Scrapbooker Award

Ella Publishing announced who they believed to be the top 9 Most Influential Scrapbookers of 2010. I was thrilled that they chose me as one of those nine!

Paperclipping Life Books Donation Drive

For (Inter)National Scrapbook Day last May, I partnered with Roxane Apple of Shared Scraps to run a scrapbook supply donation drive. Local scrapbook stores got involved and the Paperclipping audience donated a total of 640 pounds of supplies for the making of Life Books for children under the care of the state!

New Recording Studio

June 2010 139
Over the summer we were able to move our audio and video studios out of our living room and bedroom! We had our garage turned into a studio that never has to be taken down.

Of course, we had our other fun events — video and audio reporting from the Winter Craft and Hobby Association Trade show, Paperclipping Live! (our live-broadcasted show), the Paperclipping Festival for members to share something they’ve learned, and the Holiday Photography Tips Course for our Members.

Paperclipping in 2011

We have a number of special edition tutorials or classes we want to launch this year. The first one is in the works. I’m currently putting together a comprehensive in-depth course on design and the use of design principles for scrapbooking.

Once that is launched, I will choose from among these topics for the next project:

  • Aperture training — how to use Apple’s photo editing and managing software, Aperture.
  • Flexible Templates — an eBook of my Flexible Templates
  • An album workshop — I don’t want to share the topic of this yet, but there is a themed album I am putting together and would like to teach as a workshop. It would probably have weekly assignments and it might last between two and three months.
  • A mini-book workshop — again, I’m not ready to share the topic on this, but it would involve simple daily assignments and would last thirty days.
  • A die cutting course using the Big Shot.

I have other ideas as well, but there is only so much we can do in one year! I don’t know which of these we will prioritize for this year. Please help me out! What events did you enjoy last year in 2010, and what projects would you be most interested in for 2011?

And most importantly, thank you to all you scrapbookers who have made Paperclipping a major part of your scrapbooking experience!

  • Roxane Apple

I want to send you both my heartfelt congratulations! It warms my spirit to read about your success. You made 2010 the best year ever for Shared Scraps, and I will always be greatful to you for touching so many children’s lives.
I enjoy everything about Paperclipping! My vote is for the ebook.
    thank you & happy 2011!

  • Gatesofpearl226

Congrats on the growth PC…I am excited about the design principles course, can’t wait for that! My second choice is the Flexible Templates, then the mini book and the album workshops! Keep it coming! Debbie

  • Leanakhouang

i am only sad I didn’t discover you sooner! I can’t wait to see what this year holds in store! I love the big shot idea the most!a did you bite the bullet and get one??

  • Carmenchernandez

I joined as a member this year after lurking around for 2yrs!! I wish I joined sooner, but I am finally glad I did (i.e. I convinced my husband). I enjoyed the flexible templates, and the mini book I watch it over and over again. As for 2011, I would love to see the themed album or mini book workshop as part of the membership. I know you did a mini book topic but I felt that it deserved more time because I had so many questions and didn’t know where to start asking them. I have been scrapbooking since 1999, but I was stuck using the same style that I learned since then. You have helped my love my scrapbook pages, because as a someone not in the industry, I loved scrapbooking but hated my pages, and didn’t know where to go to make them better. Copying others style in the magazines or books didn’t work because my photos were different. Also my LSS had classes but the instructors only want us to copy exactly what they did and then insert our photos into the pages, and again my photos didn’t easily fit in. It is not that I take bad photos, if anything I started scrapbooking because of my love of photography and wanted to show off my great photos. I never realized what was missing was design principles. With your design principles and color technique classes I am starting to understand why and what works to make my photos stand out!! I also love that you are not “selling” me some new product that I must have for my scrapbooking pages. Many designers (and I understand that they are making their living selling new product) offer “classes” but I feel that they are constantly selling only their new product/tools. You on the other hand teach us to use what we have new or old products/tools and how to make it work for our photos. Thank you so much.

  • Andrea

An Aperture training class would be terrific! I don’t think there is one out there intended for scrapbookers. I also love your flexible templates.

  • Norma

I love the roundtable- I’m always anxiously awaiting the new release each week. And thanks to the roundtable discussions, I’ve just recently downloaded the free trial of Aperture, so a tutorial on it would be extremely helpful :) ! Thanks for all you do. And by the way Izzy, thanks to you, I am now the very happy owner of a Mac AND an iPad (iPhone 4 too, but can’t blame you for that one!)

  • http://www.tortagialla.com Linda Tieu

Congrats – you guys are great, offering lots of info and please do keep it up! I love the podcasts and of course being a member. I always look forward to seeing the update in my iTunes, so I can learn something new. Would love it if you offered classes or projects as well… maybe be a teacher at BPC? You never know…

  • Tanya

Congratulations on a fantastic year! A highlight for me was having a comment read out on one of your roundtable podcasts – was such a thrill – played it for the kids and hubby – got a ‘that’s cool Mom’ for my efforts :-) You are all doing such a wonderful job in this industry and even for those of us in far flung places (South Africa) we really do benefit from your knowledge and conversations. Looking forward to sharing 2011 with you and all of your future projects sound interesting. Not sure if this has been covered before but a conversation on favourite techniques would be nice – you know the ones you find yourself doing over and over again – perhaps for Nancy that would be her stamping (?) and each panel member could give practical hints and ideas on how they do them. Or! (going into creative thinking mode here) a discussion on the one (or two or three or more) thing someone else taught you that really helped improve your scrapping – be it a practical tip or something more esoteric. Once again love your show and couldn’t leave a comment without adding – Izzy, you’re da bomb. (you can tell I’m not really good at speaking the lingo).

  • Joanne

Happy New Year to all of you! What a wonderful year it has been! I am a new member and I love the Roundtable and the lessons. I am still learning my way around the sites. I have been a paper & glue only scrapper because I thnik the cost of printing out digital pages is high. Some adivice on that is welcome.

I have noticed that on the internet there is little if any inspiration on opening and closing pages of scrapbooks. I usually have to work hard to come up with a good opener and find myself so tired by the end of the book that it is sort of lacking any wow factor ( it looks thrown together).

I have found that many people are interested in making baby albums… or rather have me make the books.Any additional insights are most welcome, other than the basics. I have found it is very different to scrap with pictures than it is to make pages ahead of time without pictures.I’d love to hear the opinions of the team members on this topic as well.

Also for 2011, I’d love to see more vides on copics, Prisma colored pencils & markers.I know it is trendy right now, but it is really about highlighting and shadowing. I make cards to give myself a break from scrapbooking. I find it hard to make a project that is not useful and that just clutters up my workroom.

And finally, any supportive information on starting a regional scrapbook business would be great. I am sorry if I have mentioned a topic already covered but as I said, I am new to the sites and roundtables.

I wish you all continued success for 2011.

  • Pat8

I’d love to learn more about Aperture! Never miss either of your podcasts and I play them over and over as I always seem to hear something new.

  • teri

Congrats on a great year. I’m a member and look forward every week to PRT. Yes I do talk to you and LOL frequently despite the strange looks from my family. I’d love to see you demonstrate more of your flexible templates. They are so much better for me than sketches. Keep up the ingenuity.

  • SusanB

Congratulations!!! I’m a new Paperclipping member (joined last week) but I’ve been faithfully listening (and re-listening and sometimes re-re-listening) to all the roundtable episodes. I just love how welcoming and relaxing those episodes are ~ I feel like I’m right there with you and your guests and I can always find inspiration in the discussions. I don’t have any suggestions for the future beyond what’s already been noted here. I’d just like to add my sincere thanks for all the work that you do and let you know that I’m looking forward to being a 2011 Paperclipping member!!

Congratulations. I have been listening to the PRT from the very first show and love them all. I have also enjoyed all your videos!! I would love to see more on your flexible templates and an album workshop. Although I understand I really miss your live show! Hope 2011 is another exciting year for you.

  • Flowerdisco

so very happy for your achievements!!
i do normally listen to your pre-recorded shoes and love the dynamics of you and your husband.
more to you both in this new year.

  • Renojax

Not a money member (business is slow) but am a faithful follower–maybe some classes for the newbe beeginner whether digital, paper or photo? thanks

  • Sharon F.

Apeture training and the use of iPhoto and iMovie as I am a new Macbook user and how they pertain to scrapbooking
    .
Die cutting using my Big Shot. I have one and rarely get it out, though I see lots of great uses that I am in love with, I have no idea why I dont use it more. How to get it into my daily/weekly routine for scrapbooking.

How to plan out my projects better to take to crops…How to pack for a crop would be a good class too.

I enjoy Paperclipping Roundtable. The guests are great and Izzy has a wonderful voice and banter with everyone. He represents the greater public in many ways – why does this matter – especially to those of us who dont know the inside connections. Great job everyone… Can’t wait for what is in store for 2011!!

  • Keely

    Noelle & Izzy,
Thank you!!! I am thrilled for you. 2010 was a banner year for you. Keep up the great work!!

  • Suz

so many great things have happened last year – all your hard work is paying off. Wishing you all the best for 2011… do I see a die cutter on that list of things to come – ha ha I never thought you would cross over – I bet it was the Tim Holtz dies that you couldn’t resist

Thank you, Carmen, I’m glad you joined on board with us!

I would love it if you sent me your questions regarding the mini-book, or
any other of the projects for that matter. Sometimes I might answer you
directly, but it’s possible I may end up doing a post or tutorial to answer
    – it would depend on the questions. It would also help me know what details
someone would want for future videos I do.

BTW — I had the exact same experience with scrapbook classes and trying to
scraplift! The way I do Paperclipping is a direct result of those
    observations!

Hi, Linda! Stacy asked me to submit her a proposal to be a teacher at BPC a
few years ago. It was before we even had our membership system going! But so
far I’ve decided to host my own content. :)

Oh, you’re so right on that, Suz…

    ;)

    Will start sharing soon!

  • Debby

Noell, I’m continuing to show paperclipping episodes to my middle school art students when they relate to the design principles we are covering. They love you and the ideas really sink in. I can’t wait for the design class. Several have started their own scrapbooks from your inspiration!

  • Peg in CO

    Happy dancin’! :) Yipppeeee!

  • http://www.paperclipping.com Noell

Oh, that is awesome!!! Thank you!

  • Amy K

Congratulations on your first successful year…here’s to many more!
I have had many ah-ha moments listening to both PRT and PDS, as you panelists voice your perspective on topics.
I appreciate all the work you put into the podcasts, as well as the newsletters and member videos. These are all wonderful (and affordable) resources to enhance our passion of scrapbooking.

  • http://www.paperclipping.com Noell

    Thank you, Amy!

  • http://angielucas.com Angie Lucas

What an amazing year for you! Congratulations on your fantastic growth. Aperture would be a winning topic in my book. I got it for Christmas after coveting it for years! Can’t wait to start figuring it out…and there’s no one I’d trust more to be my guide. :)

  • danielle_nl

Happy New Year! Last year I loved PRT and PDS and also Paperclipping live. This year I’d love to get the e-book about flexibel templates and I’m also curious about the album workshop.

  • Scrapcomber

I just love listening to your podcasts when I am doing the ironing. The dreaded chore gets done, and I don’t even notice as you all keep me entertained. What I must do is check out your shownotes though and keep a note of all those worthwhile tips. Keep up the great work

  • Dedra Long

You and Israel are the best. I have been lucky enough to see you guys over the years as you both have grown into doing everything your passionate about. You deserve all of the greatness that was 2010 and for it to continue in 2011.
    Love you guys!

  • http://www.paperclipping.com Noell

    You’re awesome Dedra! Thank you!

  • SchoolMommy

I would really like to see a class on Aperture. My husband bought me this software in May 2010 and I have yet to use it. The intimidation factor is high :). Also, I keep hearing all the raves about Lightroom, but you & Izzy are always putting in a plug for Aperture, so there must be something to it!

  • http://www.paperclipping.com Noell

You should take a look at it and see if you can figure it out. I found it
really intuitive and easy to start using with only explanations Apple has
available for free. They have some videos on the main Apple website (just
search around for Aperture). They’re not really in-depth but for me they
were enough to be able to use software for 3 years without ever learning
some of the more in-depth features.

  • SchoolMommy

Thanks for your response, Noell. I really appreciate it. I’ll check out the tutorials you mentioned and (hopefully) look forward to your class. Right now, I feel a little guilty at having this wonderful program…like maybe it’s more than an amateur like me really needs…but I wanted it for the organizational aspects, and I have it, so it’s time to get busy using it :)

  • http://www.paperclipping.com Noell

Oh…do not feel guilty. Feel very, very grateful! :)

I know it’s designed for professional photographers, but our photos are
stories are at least as important and valuable than someone’s photography
    business. Right?

  • Laura

I am SO excited about the e-book of your flexible templates!! Please tell me it’s coming soon! Can’t wait for your mini-book and album classes, too. Sounds like a great 2011!!
