Paperclipping 114 – How to Use Space for Good Design

New to Paperclipping? A few things you should know: This is a great place to learn all scrapbooking techniques (I've posted more than 100 video tutorials). Several are free downloads, and I consistently release new tutorials every month. Others are members-only, available when you become a member. Finally, I recommend you subscribe to my RSS feed, or the newsletter (the form is in the sidebar) to make sure you get new videos as they're released. Thanks for visiting!

I learned how important it is to pay attention to the space around your subject (or in scrapbooking, the items on our pages) while learning a little about how to paint. Then I learned what the spacing between items communicates while learning about logos.

Space is huge. Want to learn about it? Today’s episode is for our Paperclipping Members. If you don’t have a membership, you might want to look into getting one so you can watch. If you do, I hope you enjoy the video! Below is the layout I assembled during the tutorial…

Girly Tea Time

12×12 layout
Girly Tea Time
Journaling written to Trinity reads: I had such a fun day with you at this tea party with Nichole. We looked at art on the street, shopped a cute gift shop, and tried hats and teas. Fun girly day.

I have to give props to Dedra Long for the butterfly on this. She gave me the butterfly and I used her idea to put the rhinestone on its body. You can see her own version on a page three layouts down this blog post.

Supplies: Patterned paper (Basic Grey, s.e.i.) * eyelet lace paper (Making Memories) * ribbon (Basic Grey) * Cardstock (Bazzill) * journal card (Theresa Collins) * letter stickers (Creative Memories) * epoxy stickers and rhinestone (Creative Imaginations) * glass vintage photo corners * butterfly from floral dept * black ribbon * flower brads from unknown source.

I am looking for glass vintage photo corners. where can I find them??
  • I won mine from someone's blog a LONG time ago...I don't even remember who
    the blogger was. :(

I've never seen them anywhere else. Wish I could help you out!
  • Cute layout and wonderful photos... love it!

    Noell,
My last comment never showed..that's strange,,, okay trying again.

Would love a tutorial on how you edited your focal photo (hint, hint)!! Also, the butterfly is so cool and 3D. How will it not get mushed in your closed scrapbook?? Wondering. Marcy :)
  • I haven't really had problems with 3-D items like this. I just make sure not to fill my albums up as much so there will still be some breathing room. I haven't put the layout in an album yet so I could be wrong but I think it will be fine in there. My biggest complaint about 3-D items is how they show under the plastic page protector. I don't like the way the plastic looks so I don't make as much dimension on my pages as I'd like to.
  • Fabulous layout girl! Trin is so adorable.
Thanks Noell for the "shout out". You are such a sweetheart!

    Hugs!

    Hi Noell,
Can you talk a little bit about the technique you used on the main photo? How do you get the photo in color and the background in black and white? Is that a photoshop technique or is that a special camera filter or feature?
  • I did that in Photoshop I think but I know you can also do it in Elements. I plan to do a tutorial on this at some point but I want to make sure I'm doing it the simplest way possible and play around with the technique more before I actually do a tutorial on it. Thanks for asking!

There are hundreds, possibly thousands of scrapbooking sites and pod casts out there and I have to say that by far, paperclipping.com is my absolute favorite. It's the only one I'm willing to pay for. When I started scrapbooking, I was mostly lifting ideas from the magazines and web galleries, but now that I know several design concepts, like the visual triangle, creating sections, like this tutorial shows and creating collages, I can create my own layouts that work with my photos. Thanks. Another great tutorial.
  • Thank you so much, Rosann!!!
