Paperclipping 98 - Design Language For Crazy
Paperclipping Members can now watch this week’s episode where I talk about design as a visual language. In it I share some ways to communicate a story that is fun, crazy, hectic, or silly plus a tip on how to avoid design-overkill.

Are you new to Paperclipping? We have free episodes you can watch. Find them in the column to the left or by scrolling down the blog.

You can view the layouts used as examples in today’s episode below:

I aspire to use Stacy J's system---I really do. I have the Photo Freedom book and love it. But there are so many parts to it and it takes so much time to set up, that I haven't yet delved in. I know that I can do it in small, fifteen minute increments, but I don't ! Plus, since I have a business that I run from home, there always seems to be something else I decide to do. I really, really do love the emphasis on stories and memories. I admit to enjoying the creative process just as much as sharing the story. But one thing that I've learned about myself is that by doing things like art journaling, I don't feel as much self-imposed pressure to create "masterpiece" layouts. Instead, I can focus more on the story.

Anyway, I haven't wanted to spend the money on the category drawers, and am wondering if I can just use my old photo boxes from Michaels'. I've just spent so much money on scrapbooking supplies (including organizational supplies) over the years that if I can use what I have it feels more in alignment with my values.

Bottom line? I want to jumpstart my LOM process with 15-30 minutes per day of organizing photos. Maybe if I blast my i-Pod it will be fun!

    Best,
    Karen
  • Karen, you'll be fine starting the category drawers with photo boxes. The
only new things I bought for my LOM system were some photo albums because I
didn't have anything like that. I just bought one or two at a time when I
saw them on clearance so they're not all the same like Stacy's are. Plus, my
Memorabilia notebooks, or whatever they're called, are just binders I had on
hand--one is a standard 3-ring binder from office max that you might use for
school. The other is an extra AC chipboard modern album (because I realized
after buying some that I didn't really care for them as scrapbook albums).
I'm just usiing standard office plastic protectors for the memorabilia. Over
time I plan to get the better pocket pages Stacy uses over time. And maybe
someday I'll get some nice drawers--I really do think actual drawers will
    help a lot.

Loved this episode because it will really help me use what supplies I have more creatively rather than buying more. Besides, I'm a sucker for all of this design principle stuff! I love the paint on the layout, too.

I have a question for you that is totally unrelated, but have been dying to ask. I know you've mentioned liking Stacy Julian's book "Photo Freedom" in the past. I was just curious as to how much of the system you implement and where you've tweaked it to fit your needs and style? I've watched your podcast on how to go through all your digital photos and make decisions about which ones to keep/scrap, and found it helpful. I'm just curious as to how closely you follow Stacy's system. I know you like to emphasize the telling of stories, as do Ali Edwards and Stacy Julian, and LOM can help with that.

Keep up the great work. Visiting your blog is one of the highlights of my week, as well as watching how poised you are in front of the camera.

    Cheers,
    Karen
  • Oh, Karen, you sure make me feel good! =) Thank you.

I love Stacy J's system. I started using it when her book first came out,
and then this past Dec./Jan. I re-read the book and realized there were
parts of the system I didn't implement right away and had forgotten
about--like the memorabilia binder. I added that this year and I love it.
Until then I'd had my memorabilia in at least 3-4 different places and
    obviously, that wasn't working well.

Right now my category drawers are in the CM power sort box and it's hard for
me to use it as much as I could. I'd really like to switch to a drawer
system. I think I pretty much do everything in her system, although, I'm not
as on top of it as I'd like to be. Do you use it?
