Paperclipping 85 – A Tour Of My Scraproom

After lots and lots of requests, I’m finally ready to show you around my scrapbook room and office. It took almost a year to get it to a state I’m happy with. But I believe that’s the best way to decorate and organize a room–to live in it and observe yourself and your needs before making decorative and organizational decisions.

My items are in a places that make sense for me now, so I have lots of tips to share…tips that are more like principles so they’ll help you make your own space work for you (as opposed to me).

Note: You can download the higher-quality episode by clicking here.

Are you trying to organize your space? Watch Ali Edwards’s blog because she’ll be sharing photos of her new room–probably tomorrow.

  • I've just re-watch this episode and I'm thinking you should post a few pics of your scraproom now since I'm sure it looks a bit different... what hapenned to the shoe boxes with the date/words stuff, etc? Have you changed anything?...

Hi Noell, I was just watching your tour of your scraproom. I love it. I have a small space in our living room, and it works well for me, as I am my mom's care giver, so I can see her from my space. I have a question for you. You showed a little basket with your stamps that need cleaning... How do you clean them? Do you find that the ink doesn't wash off if you leave the stamp uncleaned? Also, I have a small set of stamps that I used Stazon ink the first time I used them. They are discolored and won't come clean. Do you have any ideas for me? Thanks for your free episodes. I live on a fixed income, so I can't afford your subscription. But I do enjoy the free shows, and the roundtable too. Thanks for all you do.
  • Hello! That basket of uncleaned stamps is a VERY BAD habit of mine. I
definitely don't recommend it. Even when I do clean my stamps right away,
though, the ink doesn't totally come off the rubber OR the wood. That's just
a wonderfully messy part of stamping and doing art. You have to embrace it
and let that ink be evidence of who you are and what you do.

In a demo with Tim Holtz that we recorded at CHA (not yet uploaded) I
noticed he quickly wiped his stamp with a white handtowel/rag immediately
after stamping his image. It was clean and fast and he recommended doing it
that way all the time. I will be doing it that way from now on. No stress.
    No procrastination. I like that.

Noel, thanks for sharing your fabulous scraproom. I am just love the organization side and the creative side in your space...it´s really useful for my space and scrapbooking process. And I love the way that you organized your supplies by use and not by type of supplies. Really great job, I´ll take action with this for my space...Hugs.

  • I've watched this episode again as I'm changing my scraproom into our new shared hobby room :o)

I like how it's turning so far. The furniture is mostly white and I'm finding it so clean and inspiring... I've tried to use what I already had and spend just a little money.

I've also divided my room but not just for myself; Jose, my boyfriend, bought for him a corner workstation from IKEA and I've set up my stuff in the opposite side of the room.

Love the idea for the unfinished projects; I have something for that too :o)
I also love those RIBBA mini shelves but didn't want to make more holes in the walls...
I keep my tools and adhesives in a great black&pink tool bag in my table.
My journaling blocks/spots are all together in a box.
I'll think about your system for word and date stuff.
I still have to find a better place for my pp scraps and organize my buttons, paint stuff and a few more things.

I'll send you the link to my Flickr page once I'm done and have some pics.

The hard part will come in a few years, when the babies come and we'll have to give up our room... at least I still have a few years to use tons of stuff :o) in that way I'll be able to fit my scrapping-self in a corner of my bedroom :o)

Thanks for reading!!! and for the inspiration :o)
  • Wow, it's sounding really great! I can't wait to see the pic's.
  • As I've watched this episode AGAIN and re-read the comments, I've realized that I never sent you the link to my scrapspace in my Flickr, so here it is:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/8822114@N07/sets/72157622292147631/

I must take some new pics since I've rearranged the IKEA Alex units (the white ones with the drawers). I now have a 16" flat screen TV sitting on top of the tallest one and some other stuff on top of the shortest.

    Thanks for the inspiration!!

Hi Noell. I'm new to Paperclipping, and really enjoying it. Just watched your scrap room video. You didn't mention it, but I noticed you keep your "word" supplies in a shoe box. I've been known to use some of my old shoe boxes for just the same purpose. They are especially helpful when I'm trying a new organization style. If I find it works, I may go out and buy an item designed for that function. Great site!
  • Yeah, the shoe box is definitely temporary but I love your idea of using
them to try out a new organization style before committing to a new
    purchase!
  • Noell-
I loved this episode! :) You are a very organized woman! :)
  • Very cool!
  • Hi Noell! I did something to my feed reader that dropped Paperclipping -- AAAHHH! I'm so glad I realized it so that I could catch up (it's been since Jan!). Anyway, I love your post about your studio. It's such a great space and the advice is awesome!

Glad to see you again (heh-heh)!
  • Erin (Big Sister)
Fantastic, Noell, wish I were there to see it in person! It turned out great. Love the colors. Even the yellow -- didn't you used to have an issue with yellow in Arizona when you were little? Like, overkill on the sunshine? I like it.
  • You remember that? Actually, my issue with yellow followed me until last winter when I decided to challenge myself to use it in a layout in a way that I liked it. Then I fell in love with it and painted the first half of the room in March and bought a yellow top and a yellow dress!
  • Thank you for the tour and the tips! We are in a rental too sooo can't do much. Because my hobbies are quiet spread... I decided to separate my supplies somehow... I'm trying to organize my place for about a year now and I think I'm almost done. What I did; I dedicated my previous "office room" to scrapbooking and pc and everything else gone to garage (there I have my jewelry working bench etc). Still there are many things left to do but the area is more "clean" now. Love the narrow shelves you have and I'm planning to put 2-3 rows myself too (from Ikea of cource) :-) Thank you!

Wow Noell, thanks for sharing with us!! Your tips were really great. I actually have started re-organizing since watching the video!
  • Woo-hoo!

Noell! I love your space! It is awesome! Those red shelves are very cool! I was wondering if you remembered the name for the smaller shelves below the red ones. I would really like to add those to my scrap area! Currently, everything is really spread out, so I don't use a lot of the products I could! It is also smart that you have a work space and a create space. When I was taking [college] classes, I had the hardest time studying because I always wanted to make something! : )
  • You may have found the name of the shelves by now, but, just in case you haven't, they're called RIBBA Picture ledges. They're made in several sizes and Black and white.

    Love them too :)
  • I'm sorry, I don't remember what they're called! I love them, though!
  • marcy
Such a fun tour..it left me wanting more. So, I decided to watch it again in HD, omgosh, where have I been? What a difference, the picture quality is amazing. I felt like I was in the room with you!
  • So glad you felt compelled to watch more!

Yes, the low-quality video on the front page should really only be watched by those who can't watch the higher-quality versions on their computer. You just don't see the details in that version.
  • Shelley Garretson
It was so nice to visit a REAL space! So often I'm disappointed by organized spaces in the magazines that make me wish I had more than I do. I love that you don't have special cabinets and accessories...just a few things from around the house and Goodwill, just like me. Thank for those organization ideas about how to sort the goodies we collect. It certainly does make sense to sort by the way you use them instead of just sorting to sort. Thank you! Shelley
  • Thanks, Shelley, I know what you mean! Did I mention that both my tables are just cheap folding tables? No, I didn't, because we didn't have time, but you may have noticed it. =)
  • I did!! :oD

I bought a big but inexpensive board and a pair of strong trestles to build up my own table. I have it high now, to work standing up (love it!), but I may lower it for a few weeks since I'm too tired lately and can't stand up for too much time...

I love to find cheap organizing solutions :o)

Great Craft room! We are building a house and I should have room for my own space when we get finished this summer. Great ideas! You've come a long way from Guys and Dolls! So exciting to see and hear you again!
  • A long way from Guys and Dolls! Ha! Yeah, no super-fake New York accent and blond wigs in this show. =)

    Thanks for dropping by, Julie!

Noell, I like your use of wall shelves. Unfortunately we live in a rental so I have to use iris carts. Love the red and yellow color combo--so cheery!!
  • Rentals are hard. You can't accidentally rip chunks out of the walls when you're trying to hang heavy stuff with anchors that don't work. We have lots of holes in our walls.

    What are iris cars?
  • TrayChic
Love, love, love it! Definately worth the wait. It made me want to be nosey and explore your scraproom even more. Thanks for giving us the grand tour!
  • If I were more comfortable with the camera I'd take it off the tripod and carry it around during Paperclipping Live so we can go into more of the details. I'm learning, though. Maybe someday...
  • Iraida
    Loved it! TFS
  • I absolutely love it!!!

I may use some of your ideas, thanks!!!
  • IamJenn
Noell, I totally loved "touring" your scrapbook room & seeing how you make it work for you. The space looks great!!!
