Paperclipping 69 – Thanksgiving MiniBook

Paperclipping 69 - Thanksgiving Minibook

This episode of Paperclipping is for a project based on my personal take on the holiday season–I see the holidays from Halloween to New Year’s Eve as all being related, not as a bunch of individual celebrations. As a result, today’s project is not only a Thanksgiving one, but also precursor to New Year’s Eve. So even if you’re not an American and don’t celebrate an American Thanksgiving, you might benefit from a book like this, too.

This tutorial is for members only.

We also have show-notes for those who like them. Below are a few pictures of the project:

You can see the rest of the pages in this book here.

If you like this free tutorial, you’ll probably enjoy the others, too. Find out how to get access to all of the videos by clicking here.

I love the book, I wish you would put together a kit with all of the papers that you used in the Thanksgiving mini book. I, for one, don't have the time to collect all of the unique items you used for the pages. I feel creative challenged and awkward so I never get the adorable projects Im seeing online. what is your feeling about this Noell?
    Marilyn
  • This is great feedback, Marilyn. I think a lot of people struggle this way--I know I did for a while until I began to understand the principles behind mixing and matching. Mixing is not as hard as people think. For this project, I just grabbed everything that I had that reminded me of fall. I didn't spend any time worrying about whether they matched or not. Because they are all warmer fall tones, they work.

I recommend you try pulling out all of your papers with these types of colors, even if they weren't meant for fall (most of mine were not) and see how they look together. If you're unsure, you can send me a picture and I'll be happy to talk to you about the mix.

Now that you're a Paperclipping Member, I recommend you go back and watch episode 59, which is all about how to mix patterns. As for the suggestion to put together kits of my project--that's a great idea. I have considered doing that once every few months for projects we can all do together on Paperclipping Live, but I've never considered it for the projects I use in the regular episodes.

Having done it once through the Unkit, I found that it was horribly time-consuming and very difficult, because often the projects I wanted to use were not all available in one place. I am a proponent of using what you already have, so I like to share the key principles so that you can work with the items already in your stash. But because of your suggestion, I'm going to look into the idea to see if it's something that wouldn't be too hard to do once in a while, like for the November minibook. I wouldn't be able to put the exact items in the kit , but I might be able to suggest some things. No promises, but i'll look into it. ;)

This is a great mini album and some great tips on setting it up. Even though we dont celebrate the 'Thanksgiving' sesason, its great to have the principle of the album to use it for another theme.
  • Thank you. I think this same idea is great for the New Year.
  • Great idea, Noell, and I love that it will use up some odd or leftover photos for the year. A few questions:
-is the cover just done on a transparency?
-will you let the kids (except for Aiden I assume) write in their answers themselves?
-how will you display and ultimately store this mini album?
    Blessings,
    ~Toni~
  • Hi, Tony. Yes, the cover is just a transperancy--quite a bit less sturdy for what I normally do on minibooks, but I think that's okay for a mini that I'll only take out once a year, as opposed to a mini that is on display all the time.

Yes, I'll be letting the kids write in it.

I keep the book lying down on a low cabinet in our living room. I don't intend to stand it up, although I can imagine getting one of those pretty easels to sit it on once it's filled. When the season is over, I'll wrap it in tissue paper and put it in a box to store with my Thanksgiving stuff (which I keep in that same cabinet).

I am doing a small book like this for Christmas. Except a little different cover, you take an old book and cut out all the pages. Then the cover of the book becomes the foundation of the book. (I'll have to find the kink to add here!). But Ireally like the idea of Thanksgiving and in general reflecting on the past year and year ahead.
  • I'd love to see it, Kdgirl! Sounds really cool. I've begun altering an old book for a Christmas project, but I'll be keeping the pages. I've seen someone add a three-ring system to an old book cover--I love that Idea. I can't wait to see what you're doing with yours.
  • It really is a beautiful book and love the color scheme. I have some paper like yours :-)

I love minis and, as you said, 6x6 is a very comfortable size to work with.

    Thanks again!
  • What a cool concept and I LOOOOOOOVE the book -- such a great look/feel to it. Thanks for the inspiration, Noell (ps...loved the transparencies...ALL of them ;-) ).
  • I must say, those smaller transparencies really gave a cool effect to the book. Where did I get those? From IllustratingStories.com?

    =)
  • Genius! Love this sweet little book... I have to get on smaller projects because I am more likely to actually FINISH them! Mini-books are so fun and 6x6 is such a doable size. Thanks for the inspiration.

Hey... and I missed you Tuesday night on PC live! Hope you are planning on doing it next week because it is a great break each week for me and I look forward to it. I know the ustream system was a bit off with the election coverage and all.
  • Thank you, Terri! And YES, that was quite the frustration with Paperclipping Live on Tuesday. Not only we were not able to get it to work because of the election, but also the time zones around the country changed, but mine didn't. I didn't realized everyone went back an hour until right before, so I wasn't able to make an announcement.

I'm working on the next Paperclipping newsletter and I will be mentioning the time changes and apologizing for the chaos. We will definitely be back on next week and working on the Unkit mini.
