Paperclipping 65 – Customize Your Overlays In Photoshop

In today’s video tutorial, I show you step-by-step how to open up an overlay in Photoshop, resize it to meet your needs, and use it like a journaling box for your text. If you have Photoshop Elements, don’t worry–you can do all the same things in Elements.

This video is available to members only. Learn about a membership here.

For my example in the tutorial, I used an Ali Edwards photo overlay, which was a major part of my Week In The Life album. Here are two of the pages from my album using the overlay concept from the tutorial…

    Oh Ms. Noell,

Thank you SO MUCH for this tutorial! For some reason I'm TOTALLY intimidated with Photoshop! I'm VERY much a hands on my paper and glue kind of girl, but I do see so many awesome things I could do with Photoshop. I'm going to use this video tutorial and my 30 Photoshop trial period and see how I feel about working with it. You're tutorials are so AWESOME and so easy to understand!

Thank you so much and Merry Christmas!
  • Thank you, Vicki. There are some fun things you can do in Photoshop, and collages are one of my favorites. I think you'll find this technique totally do-able.

Good luck and Merry Christmas to you, too!
  • noel: thank you so much. this is a great, detailed tutorial. Your album looks lovely as well.
  • Thank you Noell! This video was super helpful! I've always found photoshop really hard to use but with your help, I think I'm ready to give it a try again. Maybe it'll be less frustrating to use now that I actually know what to do... :)

  • So glad to hear that, Veera! I think you'll find this project totally manageable, but please let me know how it goes!
  • Everything went great! I've managed to make two layouts using Ali's overlays, and I even made changes to one of them. I'm so happy to have found a new way of scrapbooking, I've never had the patience for digital or hybrid scrapbooking before... Thanks again, Noell!
  • Great, I'm so glad to hear that! There will be other things you'll be able to do now, based on many of the steps you took to work with those overlays.

I liked your old intro, but I love your new one, it diffently your style. Love the video. I just got PSE and have never had PS before. I would like to be more of a hybrid scrapbooker, I do a lot of stuff on the computer already but I just use Word and another photo editing program. Trying to learn PSE on your own is hard so the video was very good, paced just right and was very easy to follow. I like all the new things you both are doing, keep it up. Love your site and come here all the time for inspiration.
  • Awesome -- plus, love the new intro -- VERY COOL!
  • Hello liz! Thank you!

Thanks for the tutorial, I am totally overwhelmed by Photoshop, but think I might be able to follow along and do this with your explanation. Thanks, love the changes you and Izzy are doing with your new life changes.
  • Please let me know how it goes, Shannon. Your comment is exactly what I want to hear! ;)

It helps to having something visual to follow, especially for those of us who aren't doing full-on digital pages, just some things here and there.
  • I haven't been around too much lately... but needed to stop by and say the new intro rocks, girl! I love that you are venturing into some hybrid scrapbooking now. I love being able to customize things, reuse and print multiples. Great video... looking forward to hanging out with you tonight!
  • Good to see you here. ;)

    See you tonight!
  • I soooo love the new beginning. First, it's YOU. It reminds me of your cutting edge style. And the layouts are perfect; color, design, subjects. Love the spinning effect when PAPERCLIPPING appears on the screen.

I have to say, I also liked the old music. However, it was too generic and too traditional for what you bring to the table for us scrapbookers. GREAT JOB!
    Blessings,
    ~Toni~
  • What a compliment! Thank you, Toni. I never felt the old music was me, either.

First I like the new intro, very cool! Second, I think you were very clear in your directions for using PS. I learned more in the time watching this video that I did in an hour of playing with PSE. I'm excited to try this. Also, I'd love to see more on this.
  • That's great to hear, Kim! Let me know how it goes when you play around with the techniques. I'll do more in the future.

    Noell,
I wanted to tell you that your new intro ROCKS!
  • Thank you! =)
