Is The Schoolwork Flooding In?

My latest Schoolwork Scrapbook–photos of the inside pages still to come.

Many of you have the Schoolwork Scrapbook Tutorial and have already used it to make your children a book that displays some of their work and art. Others of you are planning to make your first books at the end of this school year. But do you know what to do with all that stuff your child is bringing home now?

The Problem

Originally, I had a high-quality file folder for each of my children to keep their work in while the year is progressing. I found that not only did everything not fit into my folders, but they were too much trouble to deal with when I was in a hurry cleaning up, and instead of putting stuff in them, I ended up stacking all three of my kids’ work together in the cabinet on top of the fie folders. This was much easier for me, throughout the year. But when the school year was over there was a little confusion sometimes as to whose work was whose.

The Solution

At the end of the summer I held a live event for those who own the tutorial, and one of the geniuses in the audience shared a wonderful idea. (Terri, was that you???). She suggested using those giant zip-lock bags that many scrapbooking kits come in.

I started doing it this year and it’s working out perfectly for me. They’re easy to open, easy to label, and a great size. If you’re swimming in school and art work already, you might want to try this.

Totally different subject from "how to store schoolwork"...Did you say you enjoy using acrylic paints? If so, is that what you used here (and a sponge brush?) under the words "Fourth Grade"?
  • Yes, I used acrylic paint, but not with a sponge brush. I like good old fashioned paint brushes. =)

I'll be sharing more on acrylic paint next week, so if you have an interest in paint, stick around.
  • BTW, had to chime in here and say the tutorial is awesome. I have really had a new thought process due to Noell's system on how/what to keep and put things into perspective. You can follow it exactly or just take bits and pieces to mingle with your own project. Love the live shows on the topic and have gotten super motivated by them. Thanks, Noell! Someday I will have some to show off in the gallery... :)
  • Thank you so much, Terri!

I have the Becky Higgens, School Kit, from CK for both my kids. It came with a 12x12 pocket envelope for each school year- preK to 12th. I just pull out the envelope for the year and keep it on the dest in the kitchen and then add the papers that come home for the week. Works great and I love that it is 12x12, so everything fits.
  • Kim, that sounds like a perfect solution!
  • I have those as well... I love those envelopes. They are great! I seem to collect more than I need to, so my bags are an interim spot until they get into the actual school envelopes to officially "keep" or scrap. So I use them both depending on where I am in the process.

On the subject, have you seen the new baby kit with the similar envelopes in the next KOTM? Looks like such a cool kit.

I was just at the KOTM site today and looking at the new baby kit. It is on sale for pre-order now. So cute!! I might just get one in case I do anymore old layouts of my kids ( or save if I ever become a grandma!!..but that better be way, way in the future!!)
  • *blushing genius* ... it was me! ;) LOL...

Really simple system, but it definitely works for me and keeps me organized until I can get to scrapping my son's school stuff. It also reuses the bag and keeps stuff from getting damaged. Glad to see you share this and that it is working for you, too! :)
  • Thank you for the wonderful idea, Terri. I always like to give credit for brilliant ideas!
