Paperclipping Live Announcements

Monday, March 10th, 2008

First the bad news…

Because Arizona does not change its clock twice a year like the rest of my insane country, there will be a schedule change for some of you. In Arizona, I will still be live at 6:30pm. But it will now be 6:30pm PST instead of MST.

In other words, I am now in the same time zone as the Californians, and three hours behind the New Yorkers. What does that mean for the rest of the world outside of the U.S.? I don’t know. I don’t think it changes for you. But it’s too confusing to wrap my head around, so just to be sure, check the time of your city on this website and compare it to the time of my city, which is Phoenix.

And no, I never raised my hand for that very strange twice-a-year time-change. I’d vote to remove it if someone would just put it on the ballot.

Now for the good news…

I will be handing out 5 prizes during the live show tomorrow night. Five of you will receive the Schoolwork Scrapbook Tutorial! Please let your friends know and make sure you join us for a fun chat where you can see the processes I go through as I put together a layout.

And for those of you who need some adult-entertainment (it’s always family-friendly at Paperclipping), I will be doing a page without children.

See you soon!

My New Scraproom

Friday, March 7th, 2008

Those who participate in Paperclipping Live on Tuesday nights know I have a new scraproom. I moved into about a month ago and I’ve gotten it to where it’s fairly functional.

I took a whole bunch of really bad pictures (tiny room, low lighting) and uploaded them into a set on Flickr. I gave detailed descriptions under each photo regarding what is and isn’t working for me and what I hope to change.

You can click here to see the “Evolution Of A Scraproom” set and click on the individual photos to read my comments about each one.

As I make changes in the decoration and organization of my room, I’ll post my progress, both in my Flickr set and here on Paperclipping. If you’re trying to make your scrap area more functional, I hope the comments in my picture set will give you some ideas.

If you have your own ideas to share, please leave a comment.

Design 101: How To Make Your Embellishments Work For You

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

We all love embellishments; they’re fun. But many scrapbookers complain that they see an over-use of embellishments on some people’s layouts, which takes away from the photos.

It doesn’t have to be that way. If you treat your embellishments well (in other words, place them well), they will highlight your focal point photo, direct the viewers’ eyes, and create interest where you want it.

1. Gather Your Embellishments–Don’t space them out.

You can space the gatherings out into a few spots (for more than one spot, a visual triangle of gatherings is a good idea), but don’t space too many individual embellishments out. Gather them. Cluster them.

In the picture below, you can see that I gathered about 7 different items:
1. Rub-on decorative flourish with quote and heart.
2. Scalloped paper edge.
3. Two black photo turns.
4. Wired beading.
5. Number sticker.
6. Two word strips.
7. Rub-on word (“of”).

2. Place Gatherings In Strategic Spots

Where do you want people to look? Layer your embellishments in little gatherings around those spots. For this layout I made three gatherings that draw your eyes to the focal point photo:
1. The Title: I stamped a flourish-like image before adhering my title, especially emphasizing the “O.” Then I added the red flourish rub-on to underline the word, “Once.”

2. The Focal Point Photo: I placed embellishments around three different points in this area (again, making a visual triangle): 1)Above and between their heads; 2)The bottom right; 3) The bottom left (the Mother Goose book cover).

3. The Side Of The Page:I added this gathering of word-strips as a balancing point and the third corner of one of the many visual triangles on this page.

How is it a balancing point? Before adding it, there was too much weight on the right side of the page with all those photos and embellishments. This gathering makes the photo arrangement feel it’s in the “right” place.

If you love embellishments but fear they overwhelm the pages, gathering them into strategic spots satisfy your craving for artistry without pulling attention away from your photos.

Note: Paperclipping Live is tonight at 6:30pm MST.
